Beutiful world map!
By a63show
I sent this map to my mother after we discussed the world in general and how she wished she could find some of the places they talk about on the news or that she hears about in movies. I ventured into the realm of map searches and couldn't believe how many there were to choose from. I liked the coloration on this one, so I had it shipped to mom. She loved it! She constantly refers to it and enjoys having that option. Thanks!

This map worked perfectly for the project I was using it for. I cut it into 12 pieces, adhered to canvas and then put it on the wall.

The map was a little flimsy, I wish the laminate was a little thicker or it was printed on thicker paper.

Find a Different Psychospiritual Approach
By Heather
At the risk of sounding like an embittered, disgruntled college student, I can’t let this book slide. It is one star. While the spirit of the book is admirable—as a Christian, I also think there must be a link between psychological health and religion—its execution lacked. It lacked a lot.

First, the book is unorganized and hard to understand. Kraft interplays the concepts of healthiness and holiness as integral parts of mental health; however, neither are clearly defined until the last chapter. It seems the idea was to make the ultimate definitions of healthiness and holiness the concluding thesis. Though I am a fan of theses and of definitions, they are not interchangeable terms. Had the argument built off of two solid definitions at the beginning, Kraft might have extended his ideas to a new significance of healthiness and holiness by the end. Instead, he just clarified what healthiness and holiness meant within the book’s context. This poor organization made the arguments difficult to follow, and made the book very internalized. There’s no practical application or personal message the reader can bring into his or her own life.

On a narrower scale, disorganization shows itself through repetitiveness and inconsistency. Kraft would repeat the same arguments—not in a helpful way, more of a beating a dead horse kind of way. Few arguments analyzed explicit, hard data. I found some statements hard to believe because they were mentioned as if they were a well-known fact when they needed to be argued in greater depth. Putting the pieces together in this book is no easy task.

Further considering the lack of hard data, the book seems almost speculative in nature. Do the Matthew and Shelly and Hilda and Chick and Helen and Jim and Damon and Rachelle of Chapter 1 exist? Is their existence significant either way? Regrettably, I suspect that everyone from Matthew to Rachelle is a convenient figment illustrating Kraft’s claims perfectly. If these people do exist, I fear they have been reduced to ideas that middle-aged questioning Catholics (the intended audience) might identify with. Kraft shares no relationship with these people. Their stories are way too convenient. And they’re annoyingly repetitive—the entire cast consists of bored but faithful church people and successful, sex-loving, worldly, rich people who had your standard Come-to-Jesus moment.

Of course, there’s some variety. There’s an atheist and a Hindu and some other folks, but they’re all open to and respectful to the Abrahamic bias prevalent throughout the book. Denying the God of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam? Oh, that would be much too extreme.

It’s not that I’m against a book relating psychology to the Abrahamic faiths (a phrase which here means “basically Catholicism”), or a book relating psychology to any other religion. But in attempting to be accessible to non-Catholics, Kraft focused on no defining spiritual identity but love; in attempting to remain accessible to Catholics, the rest was constructed on an assumed Catholic background and spirituality. In attempting to cleave to two separate audiences, Kraft sort of failed to say anything relevant to either.

I’m no psychologist, but Kraft didn’t give me much confidence in his ideas of psychological health, either. There were no explicit references to outside fact—no statistics or studies or even spiritual dogmas linked to credible sources. It made the text hard to trust, even if there’s a bibliography in the back. I don’t believe I can say with authority that I learned something from this book because Kraft was the only authority in this book. You can imagine, as a college student, why that would scare me.

Coming to God is a poor text to use in a college setting, and while it may have spiritual significance to somebody, it does not have academic significant to me. My vote is one of no confidence.

TL;DR: Doesn’t say much about psychology, doesn’t say much about religion, super vague, and unorganized. Find a different psychospiritual approach.

Spaceship Handbook, by Jack Hagerty, Jon C. Rogers

Book Description Spaceship Handbook's subject is the historical development of the Spaceship during the 20th Century. Arranged in three Sections, "The Theoreticians," "The Entertainers," and "The Real Stuff," it presents an amazing collection of 75 designs and their stories - from Tsiolkovsky and Oberth's engineering papers, through the golden age of movie science fiction, up to the present day's Lockheed "VentureStar" and Rotary Rocket "Roton." Spaceflight historian Hagerty delves into the background story behind each design, examining the motivations of the designers in the context of the times in which they lived. The book's selection of these historically important Spaceships has a twist; none of these Spacecraft ever flew! However, from the information presented, we can see their importance to the development of Spaceships that did fly, and also on the world we live in. Each entry has a wealth of background information. For example, in the "The Theoreticians" section, we see illustrator Chesley Bonestell's wonderful artwork that appeared in Willy Ley's Conquest of Space, a book that accurately predicted space flight years ahead of its time. Plate XLI from this book, shows the Arizona Meteor Crater superimposed over Manhattan Island (with the crater centered roughly on Times Square). Today, it bears a disconcerting similarity to the September 11th terrorist attacks. However, Bonestell's illustration was done over 50 years ago to show the danger of Earth-crossing asteroids. In "The Entertainers," section, the 1930's comic strips and movie serials of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon get their just due. Not only did they affect a whole generation of future NASA engineers, the influence of streamlined design began with these ships. The baby boomer crowd will find that Captain Video, Space Patrol, Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, and others from 1950's live TV space opera shows are included. Also from that era, George Pal's great science fiction films "Destination Moon," "Wh

From the Author
The late G. Harry Stine related the following in an address to the National Association of Rocketry (NAR) at their 39th Annual Meet in Tucson, Arizona in 1997: “People are always asking me what they can do to pay me back for everything I’ve done for them over the years. I tell them what Robert Heinlein told me years ago, ‘Don’t pay me back, pay forward to the next generation.’” His suggestion to “Pay Forward” has since become the unofficial motto of the NAR.

This book was a labor of love for me for more than four years. It is the book I always wanted to buy, but no one, apparently, wanted to write, so I decided to do it myself. I am thrilled at the response from hobbyists and aerospace professionals alike, but even more, I am delighted that it can serve as my payment to future generations.

From the Inside Flap
When the 20th Century dawned, the spaceship was a fantasy. By the time it closed, it was a commodity. See how one of humanity’s oldest dreams became astounding reality.

The driving force behind this evolution was imagination: The imagination of scientists and engineers, the imagination of authors and artists, the imagination of movie and TV producers. Despite hordes of detractors, their collective vision lifted us off of this planet in these ships of the imagination which led directly to our making our first actual teetering steps into the cosmos.

Spaceflight historian and rocket enthusiast Jack Hagerty chronicles the evolution of the spaceship during the century by examining 75 of them; some serious, some whimsical, some terrifying, and all fascinating. Jack delves into the background of each design, examining the motivations of and influences on the designers. Each ship is described and analyzed in detail. Each entry includes a data drawing by Jon Rogers sufficient for hobbyists and/or craftsmen to build a version of their own.

“Spaceship Handbook is a delight to own, to read from beginning to end, and to return to frequently in search of favorite nuggets. It gives spaceflight practitioners and enthusiasts alike an instant classic.” – Frederick I. Ordway III, Aerospace historian, science advisor for 2001: A Space Odyssey.

“The Holy Grail / of all things / Star Flight dreams / and Spaceship Wings / are made of!” – Curtis J. Hepworth, noted Buck Rogers authority and collector.

“This is such a treat for all the people who have been looking forward to it the past four years. How lucky are we to be able to buy a book like this. The fact it exists is miracle enough!” – Alex Seltsikas, Thunderbird fan extraordinaire and international Radio Controlled Rocket Glider competitor.

Excellent Reference For The Space Film Fan!
By M. Wolff
Jack Hagerty and Jon C. Rogers have put together an excellent hardcover reference dealing with the realism of rocket science as applied to the famous spaceships of science-fiction films and novels. Here are detailed technical drawings of such vehicles as the "Luna" from "Destination: Moon", the "Galileo" from Robert Heinlein's "Rocket Ship Galileo", the classic designs of Werner von Braun, the "Orbit Jet" from the "Rocky Jones Space Ranger" television series, as well as the ships seen in "2001: A Space Odyssey" (to name a few). The book discusses the practicality and background of each fanciful vehicle (as well as equally famous actual efforts such as the Dyna-Soar and the Manned Orbiting Laboratory) with not only an eye to the serious side of astronautics, but with a slight tongue-in-cheek approach in some instances. As an added feature: model rocket enthusiasts can also find tips on what might be required to construct actual flying models of the various designs. For the modeler, for the space enthusiast or for the SF-space travel film fan, this book represents an indispensable reference work.

Massive review of imaginary and might-have-been spaceships
By Stefan Jones
I should state up front that I know the one of the authors. He's the president of my old model rocketry club. That said, I'll try to do a fair review.
To start: Add a star if you build model spaceships, static or flying!
The _Spaceship Handbook_ is a huge book. It's college-textbook sized, and densely packed with text and illustrations. The formatting and editing are spotty in parts, but the author includes a mail-in form where readers can list typos and errors. None of these problems detract at all from the usefulness and entertainment value of the book.
As the title suggests, this is a book about spaceships. Some are the pipedreams of early pioneers such as Hermann Oberth and Tsiolkovsy. Others are based on magazine articles, TV documentaries, and books of the "glory days" of the classic spaceship, the 1950s. A large and fascinating section explores the almost forgotten genre of 1950s television space operas, such as Captain Video and Rocky Jones. There are also ships from movies and comic strips, as well as "might have beens" (the Air Force MOL space station, the Dyna-Soar) that in some cases were months from being flown.
There are plenty of photographs, and lots of wonderfully rendered scale drawings. I found the authors' comments on how they overcame gaps and inconsistencies in the presentation of the ships interesting. (Hagerty used a micrometer to determine the width of the fins on Tin-Tin's moon rocket.)
The _Spaceship Handbook_ includes a fair amount of material about turning the spaceships described into flying models. It isn't intrusive, however, so SF fans and historians with no plans to build models won't feel cheated. Indeed, rocketeers looking for straightforward plans using standard parts won't find them here. However, the pictures of modeler's wonderful projects might inspire you to break out your drafting gear and wood lathe.
As a sort of bonus, The _Spaceship Handbook_ includes as an appendix a large essay by Jon Rogers on atomic-powered spaceships. It's actually a good general survey on interplanetary travel and rocket science. The pros and cons of various systems (ion drives, fission and fusion rockets, Orion drive) are descibed, although not in as much detail as I'd like. I think this appendix deserves to be fleshed out a bit and printed as its own book!
To sum up: There's plenty here for modellers, SF fans, space fans, and historians of the Space Age. Highly recommended.

The best resource bar none!
By David Horvath
I admit I was suffering from sticker shock at the price on this book. Then I saw it in person at a show and had to have it. I put it on my wish list and my wife got it for me this Christmas. The heft and size alone is what first struck me. Then I opened it up. This book covers it all in depth. It looks and reads like a college text book. If it ever appeared in print or on film in the U.S., it's in there. Even obscure topics like the Silver Bird and the USAF MOL program are covered in full detail. The text is easy to follow and very in-depth. The diagrams are a scratch builder's dream come true. Even if you are not a modeler and just have a general interest in spacecraft (real or fictional), this is a valuable resource. I was struck by how each topic was covered in a very serious manner, even the fun topics like the Wallace and Grommit and even Josie and the Pussycats (yes that's in there as well) space ships! This is a wonderful book and I couldn't be more positive about it! A++++++ Mr Hagerty and Mr Rogers!

History we weren't taught
By Chris Brown
This book lays down clearly the history of 'welfare' and other things within Britian from when it started to today. I couldn't put this book down, as it contained the history that we weren't taught at school and the decisions that have been made to end up with the society we have today in Britain. But it is equally relevent to how the welfare state has developed in other countries. Buy it read it, it will open your eyes as to why western society is heading towards a major disaster unless citizens of today do something about it.

The corruption of the British welfare state
By T. Burkard
Many Americans look to the European welfare state as the answer to the inequality and social problems that affect American society. In The Welfare State We're In, British journalist James Bartholomew demonstrates that the welfare state actually makes matters far worse. This book, which is extensively researched and extremely well-written, explains how well-meaning efforts to relieve distress have exacerbated exactly the problems they were meant to relieve. Bartholomew targets the full range of social services which were taken over by the state in the 20th century, everything from health and education to pensions and housing for the poor. In every case, he successfully deploys statistical and anecdotal evidence showing how bureaucracies-far from solving social problems-- have become dependent upon the perpetuation of the problems they are supposed to address. He shows how government handouts have corrupted morals by inviting fraud, and he shows just how widespead that fraud is. Among the most corrosive effects of the welfare state are the resentment and depression felt by those who become dependent upon handouts and services. For Americans, perhaps the most unsettling evidence is his account of the effects of welfare for single mothers. No one will be able to read this book and still believe that America has a lot to learn from the supposedly more humane and liberal cultures of Europe.

Postmodern Science Fiction and Temporal Imagination (Continuum Literary Studies), by Elana Gomel

Are we living in a post-temporal age? Has history come to an end? This book argues against the widespread perception of postmodern narrativity as atemporal and ahistorical, claiming that postmodernity is characterized by an explosion of heterogeneous narrative "timeshapes" or chronotopes.

Chronological linearity is being challenged by quantum physics that implies temporal simultaneity; by evolutionary theory that charts multiple time-lines; and by religious and political millenarianism that espouses an apocalyptic finitude of both time and space. While science, religion, and politics have generated new narrative forms of apprehending temporality, literary incarnations can be found in the worlds of science fiction.

By engaging classic science-fictional conventions, such as time travel, alternative history, and the end of the world, and by situating these conventions in their cultural context, this book offers a new and fresh perspective on the narratology and cultural significance of time.

Review
"What this phenomenal book has, that many martial arts books don't have, is constant reminders to 'avoid these mistakes.' This is one of the many reasons that so many martial artists have found value in this work. Throughout the entire book, they consistently highlight shortcomings to avoid, essentially bringing a qualified instructor right into your home. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any serious martial artist and to those who are just curious about karate. Its price is quite nominal, making it more than an affordable addition to your library, but also as a means of measuring ones betterment." — KarateForums.com

May be the best karate book ever written
By A Customer
This is the most complete instructional karate book I've ever seen. It came out in 1960 and has still not been improved on. The authors were disciples of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern karate. There is very clear step by step and pictorial instruction on how to do all the moves of traditional shotokan karate, the original style out of which all the others grew. If you are attending a karate class now you will recognize your techniques in this book. The styles haven't changed that much in 40 years. There are probably more moves in this book than in your class.
The book has 22 chapters. Some of the chapter titles are: striking points and vital points, stance, hand techniques, foot techniques, sparring, and throwing techniques. There are 40 pages of self defense moves.

Fundamental Shotokan Karate
By A Customer
Karate: the Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting by Hidetaka Nishiyama and Richard C. Brown is the perfect starter book for any one wishing to learn Shotokan Karate. It describes all the stances, punches, strikes, blocks, and kicks. An explanation of the application of Karate techniques in self-defense situations is given. Briefly outlined is the history and principles of the art but what is indispensable in the book are the recommended schedules for the different training situations which make this book a perfect guide for the student and helpful manual for the instructor. After learning what is in this book I would suggest moving on to one of the books by Robin L. Rielly; either Complete Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-2108-9, or The Secrets of Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-3229-3. My only wish is that the chapters on Kumite and Kata would be expanded but that is why I recommend the two books above as well.

Early work but still great
By magellan
Considering this book came out originally in 1960 and was the first large-format book on Karate I had seen up to that point, it is remarkable that it has rarely been exceeded in all the time since. The photos of the basic techniques are very clear. The applications sections are generous with good coverage of sparring and self-defense. Nishiyama was in his prime here and you can see the power and intensity in his techniques.

I have a personal story about Nishiyama, although I didn't study with him myself, but one of own karate students did, and he told me this story. Nishiyama was in Los Angeles for some time back in the 60's and he was conducting a training session. One of the students, a guy by the name of Ray Dalke, who later led the U.C. Riverside Shotokan club to several national championship titles, was in the class. I met Dalke when I was a doctoral student at UCR back in the early 80's, but I actually heard this my student. Ray had never been very loose in the legs, especially the groin stretch, where you sit on the ground in a quasi-lotus position and bounce your knees up and down and try to get them all the way to the ground.

Anyway, Nishiyama came around to Dalke, and noticed his problem. He says to Dalke, "You want to have loose lap?" (Sometimes Nishiyama's English was a bit rough, but the meaning came through loud and clear). Dalke says, "yes, Master, I do." Nishiyama says again, "Are you sure you want to have loose lap?" Dalke says, "Yes, yes, Master, I want it more than anything!" At that moment Nishiyama jumps up into the air and comes down with both feet planted squarely on Dalke's knees, driving them all the way to the floor.

Well, he said Dalke's scream of agony could be heard for two city blocks. They had to get an ambulance and take Dalke away. But he survived and was back later after he healed with the "loosest lap" you've ever seen. I hope Ray doesn't mind my telling his story. Like I said, I met Ray in about 1980 when he was the faculty karate instructor at UC Riverside and he was really a pretty cool guy, as well as an excellent instructor. He loved the Shotokan katas and I recall having an enjoyable discussion with him about some of the more advanced forms.

Anyway, Nishiyama is one of the greats of the Shotokan style and this book is still one of the finest books on the subject. I will say one more thing about Nishiyama, which is that he has the most vicious-looking front kick I've ever seen. I've tried to emulate his style on this one but he's basically got the patent on it. Overall, still a great classic on the subject of karate that has rarely if ever been exceeded.

Please don’t give up, Mr. Hanley
By Buying_Local_From_Now_On
This book by Saskatchewan writer Paul Hanley is about the consequences of the increasing global population of humans—predicted to reach 11 billion this century. The consequences seem, of course, catastrophic to the reader who values democratic institutions and general freedoms of speech and choice as well as freedoms from hunger and violence.

The book to me explains much of the daily news. For example, Gaza, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen, and about a dozen sub-Saharan countries are all in the 3%-increase-per-year club. The African countries especially are important contributors to the flood of migrants trying to get into European democratic countries with social assistance, health care, and education—and also opportunities to initiate profitable criminal enterprises. Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries with the same religious culture don't quite make the 3% list but are also big contributors. What explains the migrants’ wish to leave their culture, and do they foresee establishing the same culture throughout Europe?

Climate change including the unprecedented forest fires of 2015 in northern Saskatchewan are manifestations of a global commitment to consumerism and waste that has for a few decades now led to exponential annual increases in carbon dioxide. Sooner or later, exponential doesn’t compute. But it seems that a majority of the billions of people of Earth seek unlimited access to material wealth with little thought about carbon dioxide or any other consequences of their cultures. Only a few have essentially unlimited material wealth already, but most of the rest want as much as possible.

The book offers reasoning and planning for those with sufficient personal strength to try to do something about population growth. Needed are political leaders who will read the book and assume the role. Otherwise, in my opinion, at some point it will take a modern Charles Martel and a large number of fatalities to save the planet from descent into a new and possibly final Dark Age.

I wish the author would be interviewed in the media. I wish the book were adopted into university reading lists. Please don’t give up, Mr. Hanley.

sex-crazed schoolgirl with a fierce temper who fights and swears like a young yakuza recruit
By Nikki K
I had read the original Asura Girl in Japanese many years ago as a young college student, and from the very first sentence became completely absorbed into Otaro's no-holds-barred style of writing; even before I had any inkling of what the story was about.
The dialogue is predominantly told from the POV of 17 year old Aiko, an irritated and angsty, sex-crazed schoolgirl with a fierce temper who fights and swears like a young yakuza recruit, but also spends her favorite past times escaping into her fantasy world of her alternate character, a Swedish exchange student living in Boston, far from hormonal anxiety and bloody school yard battles. Aiko's internal monologue barely pauses for a breath as she rattles on relentlessly, and the reader has no choice but to read on and be swept away by her tirade, as the story expands into weirder and weirder territory.

Snyder's translation unfortunately does not convey the intensity and humor of the original narrative, but then again perhaps it's less realistic to expect an American man in his mid-50s to fully grasp, let alone precisely convey into English, the rants, ramblings and slang coming from a 17 year old Japanese schoolgirl. The English version has been "cleaned up" in many parts (several sexual or violent segments have been completely omitted) and just in the first 2 chapters I spotted several mistranslations:

i.e
修学旅行ではバスに鹿を乗せようとして見つかってバスに乗せてもらえず百メートルぐらいバスを追っかけて走っていたし
which describes Yoji's dumb antic of attempting to load a deer onto the bus during a school trip, getting caught and being denied to board the bus and having to run after the bus for about 100 metres.
Snyder's translation:
"And once on a field trip to one of those deer parks, he tried to bring a fawn on the bus. When they told him he couldn't, the poor thing ran after the bus halfway back to school."

And another, more glaring mistake:
顔射されかかってそれよけて左腕汚れてシーツでぬぐって私は咄嗟に部屋の中見回したけど、ラブホの中にはラケットも竹刀も置いてはいないし代わりになるものも見つけられなかったので、しょうがないので、「なんだよー、よけんなよー」とか言ってへらへら笑ってまだミニチンポ握ったまんまの佐野の顔を素足で蹴った。
(Extremely long sentences that sometimes make up an entire paragraph is Maijo's signature style)
This sentence describes the moment after Aiko manages to avoid being ejaculated on her face. Furious, but unable to find something like a tennis racket or a bamboo sword to beat the guy with, she delivers a kick to his face as he continues to hold his tiny member and laughingly complain; "Come on, why did you dodge?".
Snyder's mistranslation -
"Having managed to avoid the face shot, I wiped my arm with the sheet and looked around the room. There wasn't much chance of finding a bamboo sword or tennis racket in a love hotel, or anything else I could use as a weapon, so I did the only thing I could. I screamed at him. "What the hell do you think you're doing? You as$hole!" And then, since he just sat there grinning, still holding his prick, I kicked him in the face."

Personally, as a big fan of the original novel, I would liked to have seen a native Japanese proofreader go over Professor Snyder's work to not only allow a finer delivery of lingual texture closer to the original, but also to prevent more of these mistranslation getting published.

That being said, this is just the nitpicking of someone who sat there comparing the original and the translation side by side. I wouldn't tell people to stay away from this book as it can show them the fascinatingly original and highly addictive world of Maijo's creativity - ideal for a mature minded reader who craves to have their brains figuratively smashed open by powerful literary dynamite.

Teenage drama morphs into the surreal and the horrific
By 2theD
Having read science fiction heavily for seven years and having run the gamut of all the genre has had to offer, I've finally decided to concentrate on one particular focus: translated science fiction. This focus has been slowly developing for the last two years while reading Stanislaw Lem, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, and some Japanese short fiction. Then, after I read Sakurazaka's now popular All You Need Is Kill Novel (2004), I decided to become proactive in procuring more translated science fiction, specifically Japanese science fiction. Thus, I put the word out and received positive feedback from a couple of publishers: Haikasoru (of the USA) and Kurodahan (of Japan).

Eager to delve into the fiction which has been out of my reach for so long, I opted to start with something modern, something glossy (as glossy as a PDF can be) and new... so new, in fact, that it wasn't even available yet--thanks to Haikasoru for providing me with a pre-release of Asura Girl, as translated by Stephen Snyder. Regardless of receiving the book for free, it has been agreed that the review be honest rather than favored by bias.

Asura Girl was originally published in Japan in 2003 under the title Ashura Garu. The author, Otaro Maijo, won the Yukio Mishima award in 2003 for this novel. He has had only one other story translated into English--"Drill Hole in My Brain" (2003)--and this was included in the collection Faust Vol. 1 (2003), which highlights "fiction and manga from the cutting edge of Japanese pop culture".

Book's own synopsis:
"Seventeen-year-old Aiko lives a life of casual sex and casual violence, though at heart she remains a schoolgirl with an unrequited crush on her old classmate Yoji Kaneko. Life is about to get harder for Aiko, as a recent fling, Sano, has been kidnapped, and the serial killer Guru-Guri Majin (Round-and-Round Devil) has begun slaughtering children. The youth are rioting in the streets, egged on by the underground Internet bulletin board known as Ten-no Koe, the Voice from Heaven. Expecting that Yoji will come and save her from the madness, Aiko posts a demand for her own murder on Ten-no-Koe, but will she be left waiting... or worse?"

-----------

Kendo and tennis may be Aiko's passions, but her girlish admiration is saved for Yoji; however, Yoji's attention isn't paid to her good looks or her cute matching set of bra and panties, a situation which frustrates Aiko's libidinous attempts. There are been other boys, for sure--including that creep Sano and his attempted facial--but those are merely transient phases while Yoji is the foundation of her being. In the background of her own character lies the idle sub-persona of Kerstein, an invention of her mind--"a Swedish exchange student who has come to American for high school" (16). Kerstein is Aiko's better half but Aiko sometimes loses herself in the sub-persona's dreamt-up personal history.

Mildly ashamed of her nocturnal fling with the famous Sano--now infamous to her mind--Aiko arrives at school with a self-defense planned, but she isn't prepared to be cornered by a group of peers and slapped in the face by Maki. Though Maki may be beautiful and powerful, Aiko springs into violent action and beats the pulp out of the alpha female, shocking the onlookers. After blood has been spilled, only then does Aiko learn of their interrogation of her: Sano has been kidnapped and his little toe sent to this parents' house. Suddenly, Yoji arrives and takes her away from the scene, so much like the hero she wants him to be... but she also wants him to the same reckless boy she used to know, willing to try anything once and damn the consequences. Sadly, this rebel attitude doesn't extend to his sex life, much to Aiko's dismay.

With a distinct online presence yet nebulously existing in her reality, the Voice of Heaven (VoH) is a loose organization of upper teenagers who are bent on catching the infamous killer named the Round-and-Round Devil, whom they believe to be a middle school child. The Devil had kidnapped and mutilated the triplets of a local couple but had never been caught, so with the mindlessly synergetic postings on the VoH's web board, the mindless teenagers set out to maim, if not kill, all middle-schoolers so as to send a message to the killer: we're after you.

Aiko entertains her own theories about Sano's kidnapping--mainly that he has faked his own kidnapping and cut off his own toe for want of the ransom, but VoH or the Devil might also have something to do with it; the realities of his kidnapping at endless. However, Yoji spots a few flaws in her theory and, being the rugged guy he is, sets off to find Sano. At the same time, Aiko's brother also leaves her at home in order to mount a counter-attack to the brutal tactics of the members of the VoH, leaving Aiko at home alone and worried about her safety as the VoH's campaign begins to manifest itself in the city: fires burn, children are ran over, blood is spilled, and the din of violence grows closer to her home. Yet, the violence that does meet her at her own doorstep isn't the violence she was expecting.

------------

The above four paragraphs only outline the initial 102 pages of the 224 page novel, which isn't quite a majority of the novel but it is the most linear and relatable... yet also the least inventive and penetrating.
With a copious amount of swearing, sexuality, and minor drama, the book immediately smacks of being geared towards teenagers. I felt out of my reading comfort zone (a broad expanse including literature, sci-fi, the bizarre, and travelogues... but definitely not teenage novels). When the minor drama shifted into the dramatic horror of the city, I began to invest myself more so into the novel.

The novel is divided into three parts: (1) Armageddon, (2) The Gate, and (3) Jump-Start My Heart. The linear yet--at times eye-rolling-ly--dramatic episode of the novel entirely takes place in Part One. This plot involving Aiko and VoH is revived again in Part Three after an extensive interlude in Part Two.

Part Two--entitled The Gate--is more like a passageway or a tunnel which the reader must traverse rather than simply step through, to which there are two equal sections: (1) surrealism in "The Cliff" and (2) horror in "The Forest".

(1) The surrealism in "The Cliff" is a slippery slope which only becomes steeper and steeper as the reader pushes on; it starts somewhat realistically but soon becomes detached, bizarre, ironic, impossible, and altogether nonsensical. The tentative bridge which links it to Part One is gossamer-thin and relies on Aiko's unreliable memory about previous incidences. Compound her fractured memory with surrealistic imagery and the result, itself, is fractured and blurred. The 32 pages of detachment have curious veins of either telepathy into Aiko's dream-state or unconscious inclusion into the lucid circumstances of her escape and rescue.

(2) Another 32-page foray follows the odd, detached surrealism; the scenes of horror have an even more tenuous connection with Armageddon but, if taken by itself, provides an excellent read. Going beyond Aiko's tenuous grasp of reality and her connections to fragments of her imagination in "The Cliff", the horror in "The Forest" slides even deeper into her intricately warped mind. Here, Aiko's alter ego Kerstein is the protagonist. Amputated limbs speed off through the forest towards tree of children's limbs that stands erect amid the lush vertical growth. Not only is an unnervingly eerie, but it also has symbolism more apparent than "The Cliff" and introduces the book's third and final part, Jump-Start My Heart.

------------

There's no one facet of Asura Girl which would draw the mainstream SF crowd, unless you're a teenaged reader with a palette for the bizarre. The initial so-called dystopia of the book is mildly drawing, the surrealism of the semi-conscious Aiko is bizarre, the horror of Aiko's sub-persona is definitely creepy, and the return to normality in the conclusion has cursors of intrigue which point back toward some previous revelations.

A sewer girl
By Amazon Customer
This is the complete review as it appears (http://ianwoodnovellum.blogspot.com/2015/03/asura-girl-by-otaro-maijo.html) at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV.

This story started out strongly and had some really fascinating and amusing moments when Aiko would go off at a tangent on some rant or another about something she had encountered. Unfortunately those were few and far between, and the further I read into this novel the less I liked it.

The big disappearance (Sano) that seemed to be driving the plot at the beginning simply fizzled out and went nowhere, and there seemed to be an increasing number of pages devoted to Aiko's dreams, all of which I skipped because I can't stand writers who write pointless and fatuous pages about a character's dreams. If the dream is somehow tightly-tied into the story, then fine. For example, if the character is psychic or is being communicated with in her sleep, then this would work, but that's not here. It was nothing more than self-indulgent, extravagant, and a waste of time. I skipped those pages.

I reached a point about two-thirds the way through or maybe less, where I really didn't want to read any more of this because it had lost all its interest for me, so I gave it up. Life is way too short to keep gamely plodding through a story that's not doing you any good, when there are countless other volumes out there which are just waiting to be read and which promise to thrill you. I can't recommend this novel.
