Hate to piggy-back a review, but Ahmad's review got it right...

I can't add much more than what Ahmad said in his review. This book was not very insightful about Dr. Dre beyond what many of us have heard or read through the years. This book felt like one long article from Vibe or The Source. Although it was all chronological and brought together the information in a clear format, it still felt like very "surface" information. Some of the best info revolved around the transition from N.W.A. to trying to complete/distribute the Chronic.

I would recommend the book for a Dre fan. For someone looking for a good hip hop bio/auto-bio I would recommend Jermaine Dupri's book which has a lot more in depth info regarding J.D. and the things that happened to get him where he is today. Its not totally fair to compare a biography with an autobiography, so this Dre book did what it could given what I'm sure was available to work with.

Everything you wanted to know about Dre (Sort of)

This Biography reads well at times, at other times the author stumbles between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd persons. With single line, dry and sometimes non emotional quotes this book reads more like a magazine article than an in depth biography. Entertaining yes it is, but the book leaves a lot to be desired. I would have loved to have read excerpts before purchasing this book, as word flow and continuity are paramount to my expectations of any books in my library. I probably wouldn't have bought this book had I had the opportunity to sample the authors writing style.

About the Author

Richard Elliott Friedman is professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature and holds the Katzin Chair at the University of California, San Diego. One of the premier biblical scholars in the country, he received his doctorate at Harvard and was a visiting fellow at Oxford and Cambridge. Author of The Hidden Face of God, The Hidden Book in the Bible, Commentary on the Torah, The Exile and Biblical Narrative, and the bestselling Who Wrote the Bible?, Friedman is also the president of the Biblical Colloquium West. A consultant to universities, journals, encyclopedias, and publishers, he is also the editor of four books on biblical studies and has authored over fifty articles, reviews, and notes in scholarly and popular publications.

A sparkling collection of Insights

In days of yore, Bible commentary was not done by the person who did the translation. Thus, both the Hertz and Plaut commentaries used the translation of another. Recently, some scholars have done both, and Commentary on the Torah (Richard Elliot Friedman, HarperCollins, 2000) is a splendid example. It covers the entire Humash (5 Books of Moses).
Those of you familiar with him as the author of Who Wrote the Bible? may be surprised that, with rare exceptions, the question of the origins of the Bible does not arise. He is solely concerned with what the text means. Indeed, he repeatedly views the Humash as a unified whole, tracing the development of themes across books, and emphasizing how language in one book is meant to reflect language used in another. His gaze is so fixed on the text itself that midrashic elaboration (seen frequently in Plaut) and defenses of the text (seen so much in Hertz) are largely absent. He wants the text understood in its own terms, as seen, for example, by his repeated efforts to show how the Bible distinguishes between offenses in the sacred and non-sacred zones.
This is in one sense a personal commentary. While his views are informed by much scholarship, he clearly speaks in his own voice; you seldom see "Tradition says..." or "Rashi explains ... " (and even then, it's done generally to distinguish his views from earlier ones). Indeed, sometimes he uses the first person "I", which is uncommon in serious Torah commentary. This is also reflected in what he chooses to write about. Not as full a commentary as Hertz; sometimes dozens of verses can go by without comment. But when he has points to make, (e.g. in the first three verses of Deuteronomy) then he takes the space needed.
This commentary isn't really designed for beginners; the short introductions and scene-setting remarks that Hertz does so well are largely absent. And it doesn't have the depth that some scholars would want. But in the midrange --- where so many of us are --- this book really sparkles. Again and again there are remarkable insights, often drawn from literary analysis, close attention to detail, points raised of the I-never-noticed-that-before type. There's a fine theory about why Moses was not allowed into the promised land, a startling and comprehensive explanation of Sotah, a good discussion of "impure" and "pure", a convincing critique of some proposed explanations of the dietary laws, a careful explanation of his translation choices for Genesis 1: 1-2, an intriguing explanation as to why the ban on homosexual conduct is written just for males (including a rare bit of editorializing), and many more gems. Further, his writing is marked by a combination of clarity and precision that is a pleasure to read and adds to its engaging character.
The book has a few essays, my favorites being a vigorous defense of the unity of Numbers (as opposed to the standard view of it being a "hodgepodge") and a discussion of the decisions that a translator must make. Alas: no index. For example, there's an informative discussion of the evolution of the control of miracles at Numbers 20:11, but how would you ever find this? The Hebrew text seems easier to read than the Plaut or Hertz.
This book is essential to anyone who seeks new insights into the meaning of the 5 Books of Moses.

insightful but not as comprehensive as some

I agree with both the positive and negative reviewers of this book.

On the positive side: Friedman is often more original, more insightful, and more interesting than the "Chumashes by committee" that most congregations use (by which I mean the Orthodox Artscroll, the Conservative Etz Chaim, as well as Plaut's Reform Chumash). On the average, IFriedman made one or two points per Torah portion that made me say "Wow!" to myself.

On the negative side: this book is simply not comprehensive enough to substitute for the committee Chumashes. The committee Chumashes tend to be almost line-by-line (at least compared to Friedman's book). Friedman's depth is gained at the sacrifice of breadth: he covers only the topics that really interest him.

And of course, he doesn't cover Haftorot at all.

This book is a fine supplement to the committee Chumashes (or to Hertz, who is also more comprehensive than Friedman) - but not a substitute.

When You Wonder What The Bible Really Says, Start Here

Having been brought up on a number of Christian translations of the Bible, and being frequently frustrated by the inherent biases, the composite nature, and the weight of the King James Bible that hangs over every subsequent English version, I turned to Richard Elliot Friedman to get a better idea of what the Hebrew text says. I had been particularly struck by the straightforwardness of his "Hidden Book in the Bible", and the virtues of this approach are apparent in this Torah.
The commentary is interesting and insightful, although it frequently only whets my appetite for more. And the mere presence of the Hebrew text has caused me to start learning Hebrew to experience the sound relations among the words. It has rapidly become clear, even in my limited state of comprehension, that the text is composed like music, and much more is going on there than merely telling stories and listing regulations.
I'm sure there can be no definitive translation or commentary on this, the most heavily worked over text in history, but this is a fine place to start.

Although there are a lot of great points in here for anyone doing improv

Although there are a lot of great points in here for anyone doing improv, it fell a bit short for me in expectation. Now I have run improv extensively in my life for the last 24 years and this book, it does have good value. There is a lot of commentary of who the movers and shakers were back in the day and why the Herald is so great. These things are all good but I was looking for something sharing the spotlight with many different insights to the improv world. After all there are many great things out there to explore! This is a decent book to have in a collection but by no means should be the only one in the collection!

Pretty good, doesn't generalize

This book was a quick, entertaining and interesting read. Lots of interesting vignettes, perhaps too many name-dropping anecdotes. It is well written section by section, but not well organized, the flow of argument is not so clear. Perhaps it it deliberately written in the style of a Harold?

I did not read it to learn how to do improv comedy, I read it for insights into group improvisation that might transfer to playing music. In this it was somewhat disappointing. Compare to say, Zen and the Art of Archery, which is a book about archery the lessons of which transfer to other activities.

Improv games contained therein may be good fodder for amusement on long car journeys - better than "I spy".

Absolute gem!

This book is co-written by two of the founders of Improv in America, Del Close and Chana Halpern and a student of Del's Kim Johnson. I've just started improv over the last few months and this book has explained the basics in a deeper way than I have yet heard. Additionally, they accompany the explanations with short form games to help you and your group experience the meanings for yourself. Throughout, the book builds the improv basics into the expert level of the long form game The Harold. It is very simply written and easy to understand. It's only 150 pages, but packed with invaluable insight and experience.

Recevied quickly and a must have for the library of every new nurse manager and even old-timers will learn from it!

Received book right away in excellent condition as advertised. Excellent content that is especially helpful at this time when every penny is being squeezed and staff nurses are being asked to work with bare bones staffing. Without the support of middle and upper management, nurses will burn-out even quicker than usual. Instead, they need to be part of the solution to identify processes that will eliminate double work and work-arounds that are not safe for the patient and make the nurse work twice as hard.

This audiobook, based on a 1921 story, follows Peck, a war veteran and double amputee eager to work for Ricks' Logging Company. The firm's executives hire the hardworking and honest Peck almost as a lark, because they're unhappy with several current employees' performance. Peck immediately surprises them by going out and selling the most undesirable lumber for unbelievably high prices. He's back in the office briefly before heading out on another sale when he's asked to do an odd errand: he has to track down a particular blue vase in a shop on Sunday and deliver it to the company president by that evening. The intrepid Peck finds the store, tracks down the owner and finally obtains the vase, proving he is indeed a go-getter. The story is undoubtedly old-fashioned, but the actions and attitudes of both the worker and the manager still ring true today. Although using an exaggerated tone at times, Morey brings Peck to life, particularly in portraying the salesman's frustration when he has difficulty finding the vase. The brief afterword, summarizing the message and highlighting the lessons-diligence, persistence, honesty-is useful, though not overly original, and Morey reads it straightforwardly, with no theatrics. This lighthearted parable may interest fledgling salespeople and less experienced employees.

Peter B. Kyne (October 12, 1880 – November 25, 1957) was an American novelist who published between 1904 and 1940.Many of his works were adapted into screenplays starting during the silent film era, particularly his first novel, The Three Godfathers, which was published in 1913 and proved to be a huge success. More than 100 films were adapted from his works between 1914 and 1952, many of the earliest without consent or compensation. Kyne also created the character of Cappy Ricks in a series of novels.

Game changer

I read this book because I've heard good things about it in a finance podcast. When I began reading it, I'll be honest, it was kind of unfriendly to me because I'm not a native English speaker, and many of the words they use in the conversations between characters use a lot of old local words.

That kept on along the whole book, but despide that, the message that this text conveys is a ver powerful one. There are a few books which I can say that are able to change the way you think about things and the way you DO things, and this is one of them. I've assumed the attitude described in this book and believe me, it changes everything.

It's kind of short too, so don't miss out on it.

Reading to ponder by

Peter Bernard Kyne has written an awe-inspiring story that he dedicated to his Chief, Brigadier-General Leroy S. Lyon, Commander of the 65th Field Artillery Brigade, 40th Division, United States Army, which most likely influenced the story behind The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How to be One. Although the title sounds like a sales pitch, and possibly that may have been Kyne's intention, of selling one's self in any scenario, he tells convincing story that shows the power of first impressions.

In order to understand this scenario, the story revolves around Alden P. Ricks, also known as Cappy Ricks and his lumber and logging company and his encounter with a go-getter that he described as anyone under 30 years old. And during the first few pages of the short story, the only man that he thought fit that trait was his son-in-law who he was seeking to fill a position at the company's Shanghai office. But little did he know that World War I veteran William E. Peck, a soldier who had list of unlikely circumstances after his service during the war, lost a part of his left arm, suffered a broken leg that was shorter than it should be, had a bout with pneumonia and influenza, and tuberculosis, would appear at his general office. And as he observed, illness did not stop Peck from pursuing his goal to land a job with Ricks's company. However, Rick and President of the company Mr. Skinner had something in mind to determine Peck's capability to prove his worthiness to the company. And as one reads Kyne's clever storyline, there is no denying how this narrative could have easily been included within the pages of a Dale Carnegie book.

The title of the book indeed already gives the reader an idea what they may expect the storyline may be about. But that should not discourage anyone from delving into the pages of this very short story that tells an interesting perspective of how one man's persistence, logic, and common sense helped to influence his goal.

How to be a self-starter--told with engaging story and it's quick.

Quick read to describe what I look for when i hire a new employee.

There is a man in my town who owns 14 Pizza Huts. I found out he made his managers read this book before he hired them. I figured if it's good enough for him, it would be good enough for me.

It is a fast read, entertaining but also gets across the point very well about self-starting.

I recommend it to bosses, parents and those who want to self-start everywhere.
