Building on important advances in economics and law, Alexander Cooley and Hendrik Spruyt develop a highly original, interdisciplinary approach and apply it to a broad range of cases involving international sovereign political integration and disintegration. The authors reveal the importance of incomplete contracting in the decolonization of territories once held by Europe and the Soviet Union; U.S. overseas military basing agreements with host countries; and in regional economic-integration agreements such as the European Union. Cooley and Spruyt examine contemporary problems such as the Arab-Israeli dispute over water resources, and show why the international community inadequately prepared for Kosovo's independence.

Contracting States provides guidance to international policymakers about how states with equally legitimate claims on the same territory or asset can create flexible, durable solutions and avoid violent conflict.

Designed and built by the White Motor Company, the M3 Scout Car saw service as a command vehicle, ambulance, gun tractor and patrol and scout vehicle during WWII. Both the M3 and M3A1 had a six cylinder gas engine (a diesel variant M3A1E1 was produced for a short time), and could carry up to seven men at a top speed of 55-65 mph depending on configuration. Both had a radiator protected by an armored shutter, and a shatter-proof windshield. The M3A1 also carried a front-mounted roller to prevent it from bogging down on muddy ground, and could carry three machine guns (two .30 calibers and one .50) on a hull-mounted skate rail. The M3A1 saw service in the Pacific, North Africa and Europe, with over 3,000 handed to the Soviet Union via lend-lease. While it performed admirably enough in the field the open top design, light armament and poor off-road characteristics led most Army units to replace it with the M8 armored car and M20 utility car by 1944. Originally produced in 1941, this technical manual was standard issue to M3, M3A1, and M2 crews. Originally restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form.

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

Mom to George: "You'll be the death of me."

In the slums of 19th century New York, people struggled to survive or struggled to get out. We meet the same conditions described in "Maggie: Girl of the Streets" in this brief novel as well. In fact, we even meet Maggie briefly. George is your typical "honest toiler" living with his mom in neat, clean, penury. Perhaps the author wished to create a whole panorama or series of portraits of slum New York in the style of Balzac or Zola, but he didn't live to do so. The short but brilliant, often ironic portrait is of a man on the slide. Sliding down. Falling in with the superficially friendly company of "fine fellows", George begins to drink, miss work, fight, lie, and hang out with a gang. His mother berates him to no use. The end is predictable. Perhaps this is far from an original story, but its execution is excellent. At the time, the boastful, aggressive, but often cowardly and bullying behavior of the slum youths was far from the more idealistic, moralizing tone of other authors. Crane was a Realist indeed. We don't have much of his work to remember as he died so young (29). You can read this short work and regret his death.

Excellent, methodical overview of our corrupt allopathic cancer care system. If you or someone you love has cancer and you need a quick education on conventional medical treatment and more humane, practical, cost effective alternatives, this is the book for you. Not only does it outline the more well-known alternatives, Null even offers up recipes to get you started on a healthy nutritional track, which is critical to recovery. Borrowed a copy from my local library, which is why I am not a verified purchase. However, buying it is a good idea if you are in the process of researching treatment options. He even lists the fees associated with the various alternative programs. Each one a fraction of the cost of toxic allopathic care.

As always, Dr. Gary Null blows the lid off all the misinformation and hype around cancer. Buy and read this book before making any serious life decisions about your health and well-being regarding cancer care in the US. I truly empowered me when consulting with doctors and others about my own potential cancer health risks -- especially with so many processed food and general environmental sources that are in our daily living path. After reading, you can never say you didn't know.

`Claim your life back.'

Thomas Keane has take on a subject that disturbs many of us - the loss of face to face communication, the hours of time consumption noted in public places where people are more attached to their smartphones with social media, texting, selfies, or other distractions form the real world. Not only is it rude when someone in your group steps mentally away to the slavery of their smartphone,, but it is undermining the old tradition of simply enjoying eye contact conversation over coffee or in a park or in the hallway of buildings, etc.

As Thomas states in his introduction: `In this day and age, having a mobile phone - or more specifically, a smartphone - is almost an indispensable part of our everyday lives. We say "almost" because while it is true that one can go about the day without a mobile phone, the fact remains that doing so is not an easy thing to do. This is because smartphones have ceased to become mere devices with which to call or text people; nowadays, they have achieved a level of sophistication that makes them the de facto device not only to communicate with other people, but also to check email, log in for work, do online banking, shop for goods, check your exact location, review services, and of course, record events either through photos or videos. The multi-functionality of the ordinary smartphone , not to mention its extreme portability, has made it the go-to device for many. In fact, many people can now do more things with this nifty gadget even without an actual desktop computer or even a laptop. So given all these , it is hardly surprising that not a few people have developed a sense of attachment to their smartphones, some more than others.' Strong words but oh so true!

A Prevalent Addiction

Smartphone addiction is really prevalent. You can hardly go anywhere where someone is not paying more attention to their phone that the people around them. The truth is that smartphone addiction is very isolating all while you think you are being more social. I see people at my grocery store who are more concerned with their phone than the fact that they are blocking the way for others trying to shop. If this is you then this book may help you.

Thomas Keane gives tips on other things you could be doing instead of being continually on your phone. You may rediscover the pleasures of a walk out in nature or the intellectual pleasure of reading a good book. Either way this book gives you something to think about. The Messianic Secret, which one century on is still the point of departure for all studies of the Gospel of Mark and of an understanding of the literary methods of the Gospel writers, is now available in English in this translation by J.C.G. Greig. Wrede's primary concern in his discussion of Mark is the doctrine of the messianic secret, the notion of a Jesus who, assuming messiahship at baptism, keeps it secret for much of his ministry until, after the confessions of Peter, he introduces the disciples to the idea of a suffering and dying Messiah. The idea of such a secret can be shown, from a study of the other Gospels, to have developed variously, and above all to go back to a period prior to Mark's work as the earliest evangelist. Wrede finds the theological source of the idea of a secret about the messiahship in a contrast between what the Church came to think of Jesus and how his life had been understood during his ministry. He suggests that because the Church came to think of Jesus as Messiah after the Resurrection, they came to explain the lack of explicit declaration of his messiahship by Jesus during his ministry by suggesting that (nevertheless) Jesus had after all secretly revealed himself as the Messiah. The doctrine of the messianic secret is, says Wrede, the after-effect of the idea of the Resurrection as the beginning of Jesus' messianic office". Furthermore, if this doctrine could have arisen only at a time when nothing was known of any open claim on Jesus' part to be Messiah, this seems to be positive evidence that Jesus actually did not represent himself as Messiah. Wrede was among the first to recognise the creative contribution of the writers of the Gospels, and to emphasise the necessity of a historical approach to the Church's traditions if we are to avoid a naive misunderstanding of the perspective from which the Gospels are written. His work is thus the foundation stone not only in the study of Mark, about whom he still has much to teach us, but also in the vexed area of the contribution of the evangelists to the Gospel. In this field Wrede's work is still essential reading, unsurpassed by the advances of the Form Critics, the Redaction Critics, whose work draws directly on his, and even of the more advanced literary critics of the present day.

About the Author
William Wrede was born in 1859 at Bucken in Hanover. He became an associate professor at Breslau in 1893, and full professor in 1896. He died in office in 1906. Dr J.C.G. Greig was sometime Professor of New Testament at Westminster College, Cambridge, and lecturer on Religious Education at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow.

WAS JESUS' MESSIAHSHIP A "SECRET" UNTIL AFTER THE RESURRECTION?

Georg Friedrich Eduard William Wrede (1859-1906) was a German Lutheran theologian, who was a professor at the University of Breslau; he also wrote Paul:. He wrote in the "Author's Preface" to this 1901 book, "For some time my particular attention has been claimed by ... whether Jesus saw himself as Messiah and so represented himself... Examination of the available tradition is, however, the subject which immediately concerns us..." (Pg. 1)

He observes, "If Jesus repeatedly commands sick people... to keep the fact of their healing secret, he nevertheless frequently performs his miracles in the full glare of publicity. Here lies an inner contradiction in Mark's presentation... Were the public healings to begin at a definite moment when these injunctions cease, then one could speak of a change of habit on the part of Jesus, occasioned by circumstances... since many of the miracles are public, the later prohibitions found after miraculous deeds lose their point." (Pg. 17)

He asserts, "during his earthly life Jesus' messiahship is absolutely a secret and is supposed to be such; no one apart from the confidants of Jesus is supposed to learn about it; with the resurrection, however, its disclosure ensues. This is in fact the crucial idea, the underlying point of Mark's entire approach." (Pg. 68) He states, "It emerges that ... Jesus' being and everything connected with it is ... a secret---not merely a secret of his consciousness but... an objective secret. Now it does not, of course, follow from this ... that this secret has to remain a secret for ever during the earthly life of Jesus and that he is himself consistently resolved on KEEPING it secret." (Pg. 80)

He points out, "These remarks [Mk 8:31-32, 9:31-32, 10:33-34] have often given occasion for the conclusion that Jesus could not have spoken so plainly about the end of his life as in the foregoing prophecies. We shall leave this conclusion aside, but the view of the passages on which it rests is correct. Jesus speaks of his passion and resurrection in such plain language that it is incomprehensible how there should have be anything incomprehensible in them!" (Pg. 94) He adds, "Jesus does not indeed MAKE a secret of his suffering and resurrection with his disciples, but it REMAINS a secret to them. But it is further tacitly supposed that afterwards, i.e., naturally, after the Resurrection, the secret falls like scales from their eyes." (Pg. 95)

He sums up, "We can find in Mark two ideas: (1) Jesus keeps his messiahship a secret as long as he is on earth; (2) He does, of course, reveal himself to the disciples in contrast to the people, but to them too he remains in his revelations incomprehensible for the time being. Both ideas... have behind them the common view that real knowledge of what Jesus is only begins with his resurrection. This idea of the secret messiahship covers a significant field in Mark. It dominates many sayings of Jesus, numerous miracle stories, and the entire course of the narrative as a whole." (Pg. 114) Later, he explains, "I have consistently kept two ideas apart: first that Jesus hid his messiahship and his being Son of God till the Resurrection and secondly that he was not understood by the disciples prior to this moment." (Pg. 210)

He concludes, "we now have a Christian approach the near relationship of which to ours can hardly be denied. This is the idea that Jesus becomes messiah only with the Resurrection." (Pg. 215) He adds later, "It may have been the original idea that Jesus was not known as messiah, and only the later idea that he WANTED to be unknown... If our view could only arise where nothing is known of an open messianic claim on Jesus' part, then we would seem to have it in a positive historical testimony for the idea that Jesus did not give himself out as messiah." (Pg. 230)
