A Must Read for Change Professionals

Rarely has there even been as large a Change Management project as the one that occurred in South Africa. To lead such a change required many people to make changes and sacrifices and to to that meant a visionary leader.

This fascinating little book had me in tears several times as I read through it. The book is not a biography or commentary on Nelson Mandela, but instead is packed full of the stories of people who met him. Through their tales we learn much about Mandela, but more importantly how we behave ourselves and the impact we have on those around us.

It would be wrong in the review to reveal any of those stories, but it is true that those who told their stories say that through their experiences and meetings he transformed their lives.

Each of the stories is a personal one, from each of them we can learn a moral or lesson, hence the title of the book.

I have to say I loved this book so much I bought 30 copies and gave many of them away as gifts to friends in the BPM and Change Management profession.

Truly one of the most inspirational books I have ever read in my life.

Whether you are involved in business or personal change I can't recommend this book highly enough to you.

I felt that the chef interviews were very insightful. It feels refreshing to hear advice from chefs that actually still cook on a day to day basis. The market is flush with books from kitchen personalities that have been removed from real cooking for many years. Though those books contain fantastic insight, I think this short book serves as a candid, straightforward, and inspiring look into how professional chefs approach making new food. As a benefit, it also includes tasty and not too complicated recipes.

Peter Gaa has helped global firms across many industries and government agencies improve their processes in the office and factory. He has led hundreds of kaizens using Shingo-style process mapping. He is a Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and a Lean Master. He has 34 years of experience conducting kaizens in pharmaceutical, chemical, plastics, banking, consumer products, software development, electronics, and automotive industries. He also improved military-type processes within the US Army and Navy in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and the United States of America. In past positions, Pete has led research, development, manufacturing, and quality departments in companies within the plastics, chemicals, and electronic industries in the United States of America and Japan. He has earned 18 US patents on new products and processes.

The World of Continuous Process Improvement is Shaken Up

This is a real how to book. It dramatically transforms value stream mapping for the better. Pete's method should be the standard used by all continuous process improvement experts. The book itself is a clear step by step approach that can make anyone an expert in short order.

Full Disclosure: I worked with Pete as he developed and refined these methods, so I completely understand just how earthshaking this book is.

Process Maps and Swimlanes for year with great success (or so I thought)

When Pete showed me this mapping method I was very skeptical. After all I had been mapping using Value Steam Maps, Process Maps and Swimlanes for year with great success (or so I thought). Then a need arose at a client to map a very complicated administrative process with many, many options for flow, huge rework and very long cycle times. Using what I had done before I may have been able to get there, but by using the method Pete describes, we found an amazing number of opportunities for improvement immediately as we mapped the process using the Shingo method. The fact that you get so much information and detail from this method makes it a remarkably rich method for understanding and improving any process. Now that I have used this method on hundreds of processes, it is my go to method to achieve dramatic improvement. Once the map is complete it is easy to understand by anyone and at the same time can handle the most complicated processes and help you pinpoint the specific areas to start working on improvement.

Structured, Simple method for removing waste and improving ANY process.

As an engineer I have been designing and analyzing processes for almost 30 years. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Gaa and learning his methods and I have not found anything else that works as well on ALL processes (manufacturing, service, administration). I have found most service and administrative processes are not documented and have very little, if any data. The Shingo-Style Process Map will allow you to gather the intellectual capital from the subject matter experts and use the data gathered from them, and walking the Gemba, to make significant improvements to any process.

One of the worst Engineering books I have used

I am currently a senior working toward me ME degree. This is the worst book that I have had to use. The author references diagrams from chapter 1 when you are in chapter 7, so you are constantly flipping pages back and forth. Not that big of a deal, right? That is what I thought until I actually had to do it. It stinks. There are typos EVERYWHERE in this book. Not to mention that almost 1/4 of the diagrams have at least one mislabeled "element", whether it be a position vector or an incorrectly marked "Omega". Having "omega 2" located on 3 different points of a link system is not correct. They should have been labeled "omega 2", "omega 3"....... I know that the author has been writing text books for over 20 years. It is sad when an engineering student that is trying to grasp kinematic concepts is constantly finding inconsistency in the book.

This is not a good book to learn with. Maybe it was my instructors methods that were terrible, but this book only seemed to add to the misery. I've never used a textbook that told you to see a figure that is over 100 pages away. I don't know if there are any figures that are actually on the same pages in the textbook. Maybe that seemed like a good idea to a publisher or the authors of this book, but when you are trying to solve a problem in chapter 6 on page 320 and I quote the book "use the angles and positions found for the same linkage and its link 2 position in Example 4-2 (p. 193)"
I'm sure it's great if you have a photographic memory. For me it sucked.

I understand that it is easy to make little mistakes and drop subscripts but I'm a student looking at this the first time and it is horrible to try to figure out all of the notation mistakes in this book. I've never seen so many errors in a single book that actively detract from the knowledge. Subscripts will consistently be left off. Worst than that derivative notation is awful and its often hard to decipher at first glance what is going on because you think the author is multiplying the position by a mass to get a force and you think to yourself this is weird but I'm also just learning this so I'll press on, only to realize your intuition was right and the author was multiplying by acceleration and the double dots over the x were "assumed". Completely demoralizing to be catching SO MANY typos in a 5th edition book that retails for $ 250 new.
