Christophe Jaffrelot is Research Director at CNRS and teaches South Asian Politics and History at Sciences Po (Paris). From 2000-8, he was Director of CERI at Sciences Po. Arguably one of the world's most respected writers on Indian society and politics, his publications include India's Silent Revolution: The Rise of the Lower Castes in North India; Religion, Caste and Politics in India; and Muslims in Indian Cities, all of which are published by Hurst.

A depressing but very accurate description of Pakistan's destabilizing role: An International Migraine without relief

The granularity of discussions with extensive presentation of evidence makes this a good read. The 'Strategic Depth' foolishness, the jihadist factory, Islamist revival are all well known stories. However, the extent of duplicity, the sans forethought move to radicalize civil society and the integration of terror as a sophisticated state instrument protected by nuclear blackmail make this an important read.

Combining with Basharat Peer's book that showcases Pak terror in kashmir, Christine Fair and Ahmed Rashid's books, this book is yet another piece of the terror-jihad jigsaw puzzle depressingly falling into place. If I was the Indian Foreign and Defence Ministries, I would not hope for anything good anytime soon... if any the worst may be yet to come as a schizophrenic, crazy state intensifies its 'delusions of grandeur'.

Knitting brain candy...

This book is full of knitting engineering! It is clearly written and has detailed diagrams.The holes are great fun; the projects range from practical to dramatic, simple to more advanced. I really enjoyed the Tancook Hat: almost instant gratification, but gorgeous. Next on my list is the Millefeuille Shawl (this is perfect for skeins of handspun).
The book's links to helpful videos are a bonus.

Scientific Facts + Inspiring Feelings

LIVE HAPPY, TEN PRACTICES TO CHOOSING JOY has two different themes: First, the author presents a lot of scientific research showing the basis for happiness. Secondly, she presents lots of inspiring stories to illustrate the points she's making.

For purposes of this book the author defines happiness to be “The human ability to thrive - to use one skills, traits, and talents in a way that creates lasting meaning and fulfillment.”

Right from the start, the author asks a very probing question—“So how does your happiness come about?” In particular, she wonders how much of happiness is “part of your makeup“ and how much of it can you actually influence.

Ms. Heisz cites a 2005 scientific study which found that 50% of happiness is due to genetics, 10% is due to your environment, and 40% is actually up to the individual. The key point, the author emphasizes, is that “People can choose to take actions that will make them happier.” So in other words, the author is taking aim at that 40% that you can do something about.

The author mentions one surprising finding--at least it was surprising to me. She points out that the chance of making your dreams come true actually is much higher when you're a happy person. Of course, we like to think of it the other way around. We think that if our dreams come true it will make us happy. But the author points out it's exactly the opposite.

The main theme of the book is something Ms. Heisz calls “Ten practices of Happiness.” For each of the 10 practices, she explains the scientific basis for this practice, followed by inspiring stories to encourage you towards that practice. The ten practices are: ATTITUDE, CONNECTION, MEANING, CREATIVITY, GRATITUDE, MINDFULNESS, HEALTH, RESILIENCE, SPIRITUALITY, GIVING BACK.

Perhaps the most poignant chapter is called the “Beauty of Blindness.” The author tells the story of a middle-aged woman, Sabriye Tenberken, and how she coped with going blind from a very early age. Sabrina decided to have a positive, empowering attitude to govern every part of her life, instead of focusing on her difficulties. Sabriye went on to accomplish wonderful things in helping the blind, and even formed the organization “Braille without Borders.” She has been honored with dozens of awards worldwide. You can read her story in My Path Leads to Tibet: The Inspiring Story of the Blind Woman Who Brought Hope to the Children of Tibet. For those interested, you can also read about my daughter's journey with the same disease in her book, Believing is Seeing.

The story of Sabriye has great personal significance for this reviewer, since the cause of Sabriye’s blindness, retinitis pigmentosa, is precisely what is causing my own daughter to go blind. I found it encouraging to see how others cope with this terrible disease.

All in all, I found LIVE HAPPY, TEN PRACTICES TO CHOOSING JOY to be an intriguing, encouraging book, I especially like the portions were the author cites scientific evidence for her ideas. In other words, LIVE HAPPY isn't just a book of random theories and wishful thinking; rather, the author really supports the concepts with good scientific research.

Happiness Takes Practice

More than just kittens and rainbows--gives the tools and examples to turn your life around

I bought this book for a friend who had recently gone through a difficult time. I wanted to get her something more than a collection of kitten photos, and "Ten Practices" was the perfect thing. It doesn't just tell you to buck up and be happy--it gives you tools you can actually use and put into practice on a daily basis to turn your life around. It also gives many moving examples of strong individuals who have done just that. A great book. Not crazy about the cover, however, but you know what they say....

This will get your feet wet, but it's not rigorous.

Knowing nothing about Actionscript and having pitifully little programming experience, I turned to this book as a first step in learning Actionscript. It is very much part of the "Type this, click that" teaching method, which is great for getting your feet wet. You read through and do the exercises and stuff happens on the screen. The author includes some detail about Actionscript, but he doesn't discuss anything in depth. I found myself wanting more information in just about every exercise.

For example, the book includes an exercise for making a sort of word game. The program has arrays of names, verbs, and nouns. The interface also has inputs for adding words to the arrays. When the player presses the "generate" button, the program is supposed to fill in the blanks with words from the lists. Unfortunately, I found that the program frequently fails to generate a word, leaving a hole in the sentence. I know that can be fixed; but if I want to fix it, I have to do research and fix it myself. The book goes no further.

Along the same line, most of the exercises are empty exercises. The author frequently ends sections with instructions to close the exercise windows without saving the work. Larger projects are not followed from start to finish, either. Everything is broken into bite-sized pieces and pre-digested.

I've never used Lynda products before. While I did get something out of the book, I wouldn't really recommend it because it's not rigorous enough to truly learn Actionscript programming. It's just an introduction. I suppose that's the idea. To get the full education, you have to buy more products and do more exercises. I will look elsewhere for more information and give this book three stars.

I purchased this book expecting to get a good grasp on Actionscript 3.0 by the time I was finished. After going through 3/4 of the book, and exercises, I finally stopped.

Let me first mention what I have found/do find nice in this book.
1. On pages 4-5 there is a nice comparison between AS2 & AS3. Top-notch. I have not encountered another example as clear as this. Since then I have purchased 5 more major references to AS3 and none of them are as clear to me as this.
2. The operator & function list (p.55-56) is the best quick reference I have found yet.
3. The same goes for the accepted sound formats (p.297).
4. Having found an easier book to learn AS from scratch "Learning ActionScript 3.0 - A beginner's Guide". Now I value this book for my ability to find sample code quickly.

That being said...I had a very rough time learning with this book. The supposedly helpful explanations (on pages 29, 41, 49, 65, 133) are more confusing than helpful. Some better analogy would have served his purpose better. I hope this is changed in future revisions.

Another difficulty was that for each section, the book repeatedly uses the same illustration. This makes it difficult to learn.

This is not a beginner's book. But, after you get some AS under your belt, this book sure makes a decent reference.

Leaves something to be desired

ActionScript 3.0 for Adobe Flash CS3 Professional Hands-On Training

I can't understand the glowing reviews that were given by 2 people who were not users. Like all lynda.com training, the book is overly simplistic having you type in code that they give you. I can't for the life of me understand how one can learn action script by this method (especially a beginner). The graphics included on the CD are also very simplistic and after 11 chapters of the same images boring.
