About the Author
Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and seventh editions of Human Development and the eighth edition of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr.Papalia and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. A former teacher, she has developed educational materials for all levels from elementary school through college and has prepared ancillaries to accompany the Papalia-Olds books. She is author or coauthor of four books addressed to general readers, including Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted. She has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has lectured extensively and made national and local media appearances throughout the United States on education and gifted children. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she was graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

merchandise ok, customer service not so ok

This seller does not know how to provide great customer service. Amazon does though. I ordered this book and then found out before I had received it that it was the wrong book. I contacted the seller who told me I could not return it- I would have to sell it instead. He said that Amazon does not allow returns because his seller rating will go down. I said that I didn't think that was the case. He continued to refuse the return though I had still not yet received the book. I contacted Amazon through the A-Z guarantee and they must have contacted him. About a week later, the seller contacted me to let me know he would be issuing a refund, but it was for significantly less than I had paid for the book. He claimed he had deducted money for his commission, shipping, etc. However, I had paid for the shipping when I purchased the book, and he hadn't sold anything so he didn't get commission. Anyways. After continuing this back and forth and arguing, etc. I finally had to contact Amazon again. I eventually received more of a refund, but never fully received my refund. This seller had probably the worst customer service I have ever recieved through Amazon, and the experience has made me wary of ordering from Amazon again, even though Amazon provided great customer service.

One of the finest development texts available

For my teaching, I was assigned this text to use. However, I quickly came not only to appreciate it, but to sing its praises. The beauty of this text is that it combines a respect for theory with a respect for the student's need to have a textbook with utility. Regarding theory, Papalia and her co-authors present the theoretical diversity of the field of human development (Freud is here, so is Erikson, so is Piaget, so is Gibson, so is Schaie, so is Vygotsky, so is Baillargeon, etc.). Regarding utility, Papalia et al. present research-based guidelines and suggestions that students can offer to clients for parenting their children and can use themselves for parenting their own children. As a comprehensive general textbook, this is an excellent volume. My only caveat with this is the CD. The study guide provided does not lend itself to cut-and-paste into an instructor's own notes and the test bank includes far too many inane questions (e.g., asking about Jackie Robinson, who was the subject of an introduction to one of the chapters). I found myself having to rework many of the questions or outright writing my own.

About the Author
Raised on a daily dose of P.G. Wodehouse and hands-on scientific experimentation, Ramgopal 'RamG' Vallath learned two things pretty early: one should never take oneself too seriously, and no problem is unsolvable. Soon, he was whizzing through life, having got an all-India 129th rank in the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE). The fact that he did an extended five-year B.Tech. from IIT Madras did not have anything to do with his love for the subject. Having figured out that electronics was not his cup of tea, he jumped into the management rat race to do an MBA from the Xavier Labour Relations Institute in Jamshedpur. He went on to build a successful corporate career, becoming a COO in Airtel at thirty-five, one of the youngest circle heads in India's telecom industry. Not satisfied with the level of challenge in life, he also got diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder which crippled him. Never one to give up, he kept a positive outlook. Over the next ten years, even as he grappled with his deteriorating health, he continued to hold down tough and complex jobs, first as a director at Dell and then at HP. In his quest for improved fitness, he lost 12 kg and taught himself how to swim by watching YouTube videos. He is now a motivational speaker and has addressed thousands of children as well as corporate employees, making them laugh out loud as he shared life-changing lessons. He is also the author of a wacky and humorous science fantasy novel called Oops the Mighty Gurgle.

A must read

I was fortunate to have worked under the leadership of RamG. Reading his book is like looking into his heart. The book pumped positivity into me, felt like I drank an ocean of a positive potion.

My favorite part was...In fact almost the whole book is... Too difficult to pick one...

Penultimate Inspiration for Mere Mortals

RamG style of narration showcases the power of human spirit to a new level. Today, I have learnt a new way to smile back at life, despite the pain it gives us in our neck. The one penultimate inspiring and well illustrated and justified life-lesson (for me) from the book is this: Never keep a grudge ... Bottling up anger and resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Resentment hurts only oneself. Life is way too short to waste on negative emotions. Thank You RamG .. you are a gem of a person!

An easy and humorous read that is difficult to put down. RamG's simple yet powerful account of how he overcame his health and career crises is both inspirational and instructional. Especially enjoy the nuggets of 'wisdom' and 'lessons learnt' at the end of each chapter!

Wow. This book is a real eye opener. I've read my fair share of holocaust stories before, but this is my first time reading about the female guards. I really almost didn't believe it. It's amazing what level of evil that they were capable of. It definitely goes with the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover" because these women don't look like they'd be capable of every thing that they've done. I think that more people need to be made aware of these horrors. I definitely learned a lot while reading this short book. It's a fast read yet very detailed.

Just Don't Buy It

I am an avid reader and researcher of all things WWII and Holocaust. This book, as mentioned by other reviewers, is the epitome of opinion writing with little support. It is repetitive and, frankly, a waste of money. It is also poorly edited. Honestly, I felt like one one my middle school students wrote it, then had another middle school student edit with no adult input.

In short, war is just as often a function of development as it is of social decay.

This long-unavailable volume remains one of the major touchstones by which we can judge efforts to create an international social science. There are few areas of social or cultural life that are not covered—from painting, art, and music, to the ethos of universalism and particularism. These are terms which Sorokin introduced into the literature long before the rise of functional doctrines. For all those interested in cultural and historical processes, this volume provides the essence of Sorokin's remarkably prescient effort to achieve sociological transcendence, by taking seriously the place of spiritual beliefs in the structure of societies.
