Egypt's Queens

I've been waiting for a book like this to come out. If you have Chronicle of the Pharaohs you have to have this companion book. I truly enjoyed being able to see the woman or women behind the man. Also how the book gave insight of what life was like for the women inside the palace walls and out. I used it when I taught the 5th graders about Egypt at my daughters'school.

Joyce Tyldesley's research is evident in her writing. She did a good job on many Queens who are veiled in mystery as her biographies of the well known names. This book serves as a great mate to the Chronicles of the Pharaohs. Enjoyable reading.

A Great Tribute To Women Of Ancient Egypt

In Chronicle of the Queens of Egypt, Tyldesley's novel of the history of ancient Egypt is told from a different perspective, the queens of Egypt. The queens that have been shrouded in the background and eclipsed for centuries by their more-powerful and more-famous husbands, the pharaohs of Egypt, now take center stage in this biography. Spanning for 3,000 years of Egypt's history, Tyldesley's novel gives an intriguing biography of each queen.

Among these amazing stories of these queens are the biographies of the famous women: Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, Ankhesenamun (King Tut's wife), Nefertari, and Cleopatra VII (the last Egyptian pharaoh), and along with the other less well-known queen consorts. Each of these consorts were powerful in their own right and played a vital necessary role in serving the pharaoh, participating in both political and religious roles of ancient Egypt. Some of these queens had as much power as their husbands, were recognized as their equals, and ruled alongside as co-regents. Some of the queens were regents and female kings (some of them like Sobeknefru, Hatshepsut, and Tawosret were both). Some were the King's Mother, who was given more power and authority than a queen's consort.

Tyldesley also gives the reader detailed information about the women of ancient Egypt for example, women's health and childbirth, women's hygiene, and hairdressing, and women in literature. She also talks about the religion of ancient Egypt, the roles of the Egyptian priestesses, and the roles of the female deities. She also mentions the obscure secondary wives of the pharaohs, wives who were not queen consorts. Unlike the hegemonic discourse of harem women sitting idly in the palace, these women actually had to work for their keep. Some of the harem queens became King Mothers (a title to given to mothers of the king). Tyldesley mentions one harem queen, Tiy, who plotted to kill her husband, Ramesses III, so her son could rule as Egypt's next king. The plan ultimately backfired, and Queen Tiy and her son were forced to commit suicide.

Overall, Tyldesley's biography of each Egyptian queen is a fascinating and much needed account. The novel is written in a comprehensive style for the general reader. It is complete with timelines and genealogical trees that helps the reader understand and not get lost. It is filled with fascinating pictures of the archeological findings of the majority of the queens, for instance, some of the queens' jewelry, statues of the queens, pictures of their tombs, and even pictures of their mummies. The stories themselves are very easy to read and enjoyable. The reader will also gain an accessible, quick, and detailed account about the history of the Egyptian empire that spanned for 3,000 years. My only complaint about this book is that the names are hard to pronounce, and I wish that there was a pronunciation guide included. This novel is a tribute to not only the Egyptian queens but also to all women in Ancient Egypt.

Still the Best Bang for Your Buck in IV Drug References

In regards to the Kindle edition:
1) They fixed the equation formatting errors present in the 2014 edition
2) There is an alphabetical by generic name contents that makes it a breeze to find the drug information quickly.

In regards to the text itself, I have found no better value intravenous drug reference available. There are drug references that go into more detail on drug compatibility (Trissel's Guide or King's Guide), but there are far more expensive and completely lacking in the day-to-day, need-to-know front-line information. This book concisely tells common uses for the drug, how to mix, how to administer, compatibility, stability and much more.

like rate of administration

This book was not required for school but we had these in our skills lab. I purchased one so I could prepare for our simulations by making drug cards ahead of time.
This helped me out greatly during clinicals too because we started doing IV Push meds in 3rd semester and we needed to know more info than what Davis's Drug Guide had; like rate of administration.
This is worth the investment! Also, it has a great section on abbreviations so you can look those up quickly and not feel like a dummy.
Sure, there are online iv drug guides but I like to highlight and my instructor wants you looking them up in the book. I liked having my highlighted notes in my book as opposed to the non-highlighted IV Drug Guides in the hospital med room.
Also, I wrote my name on the page edges (with book closed if you know what I mean) so that my book doesn't get lost. I also tab the commonly used drugs (and drugs my patient is on) so I can find them easily.

Worth the price and well written

This is a well written book with clear instructions for setting up the Raspberry PI as a VPN Server. One problem I ran into was with PortMapper. The link provided downloaded an Alpha version which does not work. Getting the version used in the book resolved this issue. It would also be nice if it had a troubleshooting section. But other than that, a pretty good instruction manual.

Very well written book and support

This is a very well written book and every command is accurate and well commented.
I was able to follow the instruction and set up my VPN server in a couple of days of spare time.

Due to my typing errors during the setup i had to use the support from the author.
The support was excellent and the author took his time to support me until it was working.
My best recommendation and to the book and thanks Ira for your help.

This is a very good book -- it provides detailed insturctions for a rather complex task

The writing in this book is good. The instructions are clear and well organized. My background is 40+ years as a programmer, systems programmer and consultant. I worked mostly with IBM computers/systems but consider myself a beginner in the Unix-based world. Building this VPN server by following the instructions is a very detailed process with a lot of steps. I suggest that one follow very carefully and keep good notes.

There were some problems with the first version of this book. There is an email address for the author on the second page of the book. I am in contact with him. He has made some revisions to the book and he worked diligently with me to resolve the issues.

Part of the process involves installing WinSCP which, by the way, is a nice program. I downloaded the script files onto my Windows system and used WinSCP to copy (drag & drop) the files onto the RPi system. This works fine but the files use Windows line-end conventions, not Unix conventions. They must be changed before they can be used on Unix. This is easily done with the dos2unix command. That command is not part of the Raspbian installation but the command "sudo apt-get install dos2unix" quickly installs it.

D. N. P. Murthy is the Professor of Engineering and Operations Management in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland and a Senior Scientific Advisor to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. His current research interests include various aspects of technology management (new product development, strategic management of technology), operations management (lot sizing, quality, reliability, maintenance), and post-sale support (warranties, service contracts). He has authored or co-authored 15 book chapters, 140 journal papers and 130 conference papers.

Wallace R. Blischke was a member of the faculty of The Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, for 27 years. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the Marshall School and Consultant in Statistical Analysis. His specialities include design of experiments, data analysis, reliability, quality assurance, design of sample surveys, estimation theory, and management science. He is co-author of two books.

In this book James Turner Johnson explores the cultural traditions of the Christian West and Islam in an effort to encourage a constructive dialogue on the nature of war for religion. No other issue highlights the difference between these two cultures more clearly or with more relevance for their interrelations throughout history and in the contemporary world.

In the West, war for religion is most often dismissed as a relic of the past, belonging to a time less rational and less civilized than our own. From this perspective, Muslims who advocate holy war are seen as religious fanatics who are supporting criminal and terrorist activity. By contrast, war for religion has an honored place in the Islamic world, associated with a perennial religious requirement: striving in the path of faith by heart, tongue, and hands. This striving is designated by the now familiar term jihad. In fact, striving by the sword is the "lesser" jihad, and many Muslims themselves are troubled by reductionistic appeals to jihad to justify terrorism, revolution, and anti-western activity. According to Johnson, for there to be any dialogue between Islam and the West we must understand that in the West religion and politics are placed in separate spheres, while normative Islam regards religion as properly integral to the political order. From this perspective religious concerns should have a place in statecraft, including the use of military force.

Three questions form the heart of Johnson's inquiry: Is there a legitimate justification for war for religion? What authority is required? What is the proper conduct in such wars? In each case, he asks the question by comparing religious wars with other kinds of wars. The picture that emerges is of war for religion not as an expression of fanatical excess but as a controlled, purposeful activity. With an eye to the present day, Johnson examines cases in history where distinctive models of war for religion were implemented by rulers. This in turn sets the stage for critical judgment on contemporary appeals to the idea of jihad in relation to political aims.

Well known for his work on peace and just war, Johnson draws upon a wide base of historical and comparative scholarship. While the book is anchored primarily on the past, on the roots and historical development of the two traditions, his aim throughout is to shed light on contemporary attitudes, ideals, and behaviors, especially as they bear on real problems that affect relations between Western and Islamic cultures in the world today.

Garbled but useful reading

I found the structure of this book to be very garbled. Although the titles suggest that he intends to cover one tradition, then the other, in effect he keeps shifting from one to the next so that in the end, everything is lumped in together. If you struggle through, you'll get some good information out of it.

Johnson is an experienced scholar with presumably valid insight into the cultural differences that support the assumption of a holy war between Islam and the west. However, he uses ten words where one would do, rarely offers examples, and leaves the reader with the task of translating voluminous indirect language into something that might, somehow, be understood.
