As with previously reviewed `Crash course' books, these texts are written for students by students, as such the understanding of the subject matter is made much easier due to the author considering your current knowledge is null and void! What I enjoy the most about these books is how everything is broken down, right back to basics, to understand for example, `HOW' ATP is generated, and although when flicking through the book you may be tempted to put it right back on the shelf when you see some of the diagrams of certain synthesis productions and their subsequent stages, the supporting text does take you through each stage step by step. The chapters on vitamins and minerals I believe would be of benefit for student nurses due to further understanding chemical implications and the chapter on metabolic disease is excellent detailing why they occur, complications and symptoms.

This is THE most amazing book to teach you about metabolism and nutrition! It takes a complicated subject and breaks it down into tiny bites, in simple language, making the concepts easy to follow and absorb. Plus the authors tell you facts that other authors either don't tell you at all or present in ways that are often confusing and misleading to students. Extraneous and unnecessary details are left out, and even the graphs and the accompanying texts are great. Learning about Metabolism, nutrition and even the physiopathologic bases of disease becomes almost fun!

Meira Levinson's NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND Reminds Us That We All Have A Voice That Deserves To Be Heard

One of the worst feelings in the world is to be in a place an be treated like you're invisible. It's a terrible experience, but one that men and women have to contend with each and every day. What Meira Levinson's book NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND reminded me of, however, is that this is also a situation that young people in certain areas have to contend with as well.

This book is more than just about education and the disparities that exist in some areas of the United States. It is about what seems like an attitude of neglect for some and even apathy towards others that seemingly are being set up for failure. Meira knows this world firsthand because she taught in it, but we are able to see through her account exactly what some of those who are supposed to mold our future are having to deal with.

As someone who is all about discussing a problem with the hopes of finding a solution, my initial reaction to the book is what can I do to help fix this. I then realized that it's a question we all have to ask ourselves, and be willing to step up when the answer becomes clear to us. First we have to sound the alarm that there is trouble in our education system. Then we have to look for ways to bridge the gaps that exist, realizing that people of all walks of life deserve the opportunity to reach their own personal greatness. And that personal greatness doesn't have to be defined by what those in their families have been able to do or even those in their neighborhoods.

It's all about hope, and not giving up on that hope even when things might not move as quickly as we would like. Meira Levinson tells us that change can occur, but we have to be willing to evolve and change ourselves in order to achieve it. NO CITIZEN LEFT BEHIND is a great resource for anyone looking to make sure that those in the next generation realize they have a voice and are given the tools to make sure it is heard.

Important book for educators and anyone interested in the health of democracy in the US

In No Citizen Left Behind Dr. Levinson clearly articulates a rationale for why the civic empowerment gap is a problem for all Americans. The fact that many voices (mostly those of the poor and people of color) are not heard by politicians and policy-makers not only tarnishes the promise of American democracy but also yields ineffective public policy. Then Dr. Levinson presents one solution to this problem: improved civic education, especially for students in disenfranchised communities. Using anecdotes from her years as a teacher, arguments based on her training as a political philosopher and ample social science research, she engages the reader in a provocative discussion about the state of civic education today and how it could be improved. Dr. Levinson's writing contains all of the rigor of the academy, but is written for a general audience who just wants to know more about how American democracy can become more inclusive. Teachers and teacher educators, especially history teachers, should definitely read No Citizen Left Behind. I am a teacher educator and will be assigning this book to all of my pre-service teachers. No Citizen Left Behind

In No Citizen Left Behind Meira Levinson puts some fire into the often dull argument that the United States needs to get serious about civic education, calling for reform for a system that today largely excludes poor and minority students from democratic participation. Levinson explores the causes of and potential solutions to this "civic empowerment gap" through many lenses. As a political philosopher, she considers the political, sociological and historical context of the United States and of our education system, closely examining the meanings of citizenship and democracy. She asks hard questions about how we teach civics in a diverse country where our ethnoracial identities invariably dictate our experiences of citizenship. She grapples with how these theories trickle down into practice by sharing personal stories from her years of inner-city teaching. In addressing these questions and others, she doesn't fantasize about an unreachable Shangri-La of civic education. Instead, she clearly outlines the qualities of her gold standard curriculum, Action Civics, and highlights schools and organizations that have begun to actualize it.

This book is an important read, especially now, as political discourse seems to be dissolving into party-line semantics. While the book highlights many severe problems with our schools and political institutions, it also provides hope by showing that it is possible to educate ALL citizens to create a robust and engaged democracy.

So many great recipes and other health info!

This book really exceeded my expectations! I'm sure we've all seen recipe books that are nothing more than a boring list of ingredients and directions. Well, not this book!

The author gives a lot of great health and nutrition info at the start, which is helpful. And as someone who loves my green juice, I actually got some great ideas from this book - like chilled green tea for a liquid base (I normally just use coconut water).

I also enjoyed how all the recipes give you a "why" in term as to why certain ingredients are good for you (like weight loss or better skin).

The recipes all have cute names, which is just fun. Overall, this recipe book is a steal at this price! And I'm stoked that I have so many yummy New recipes to try out.

This books makes the beginner smoothie maker want to continue. I bought my blender two months ago and the book that came with it made me overwhelmed and want to send it back. This book showed me just how easy it SHOULD be.

good book

I like this book because the author doesn't stick to strict amounts for the ingredients in each smoothie. You can adjust the amounts of each ingredient to suit your taste, and if you don't have an ingredient you can just leave it out. Also, most of the ingredients are things we actually know, no going to a health food shop to try to find something you've never heard of just so you can make a smoothie. She also doesn't make outrageous health claims, she actually advises seeing a doctor for medical conditions.

An Insightful, Powerful Story

Karen Jackson's book describes her journey from a scared, hurt little girl into a powerful, confident shamanic healer. From the first page, she opens up and reveals her pain, her fear and her truth. She deftly weaves personal story with shamanic exercises in such a way that helps the reader to identify with and share her pain, and then grow with her through the exercises.

I am using her exercises to work through my painful, tangled emotions after my recent divorce. Karen's book is helping me cut through the cloud of recriminations, guilt and shame so I can re-claim my power and move forward with joy.

Thank you, Karen, for your courage and honesty, and for sharing your journey.

Intrusion detection and analysis has received a lot of criticism and publicity over the last several years. The Gartner report took a shot saying Intrusion Detection Systems are dead, while others believe Intrusion Detection is just reaching its maturity. The problem that few want to admit is that the current public methods of intrusion detection, while they might be mature, based solely on the fact they have been around for a while, are not extremely sophisticated and do not work very well. While there is no such thing as 100% security, people always expect a technology to accomplish more than it currently does, and this is clearly the case with intrusion detection. It needs to be taken to the next level with more advanced analysis being done by the computer and less by the human.

The current area of Intrusion Detection is begging for Machine Learning to be applied to it. Convergence of these two key areas is critical for it to be taken to the next level. The problem is that I have seen little research focusing on this, until now.

After reading Machine Learning and Data Mining for Computer Security, I feel Dr Maloof has hit the target dead centre. While much research has been done across Computer Security independently and Machine Learning independently, for some reason no one wanted to cross-breed the two topics.

Dr Maloof not only did a masterful job of focusing the book on a critical area that was in dire need of research, but he also strategically picked papers that complemented each other in a productive manner. Usually reading an edited volume like this, the chapters are very disjointed with no connection between them. While these chapters cover different areas of research, there is a hidden flow that complements the previous chapter with the next.

While Dr Maloof points out in his Preface the intended audience, I feel that there are two additional critical groups. Firstly, I feel that any vendor or solution provider that is looking to provide a competitive advantage for their product should read this book and see exactly what the potential of next generation intrusion detection can provide. Secondly, I feel that any Computer Science student should read this book to understand the power of convergence across technologies. Everyone is searching for new solutions to intrusion detection within Computer Science and more specifically within Computer Security. But until they are willing to take a step back and provide insight and knowledge from another domain, like Dr Maloof has done, they will not find suitable answers.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in how research can improve computer security It also provides insight into additional areas of research that can be pursued. The criteria to measure a book like this is: ‘Does it get you thinking and does it nurture the creative juices from within?’ The short answer is absolutely. After reading this book, I was writing down several additional areas that I wanted to research and pursue as follow-on to reading this book. That is a key mark of a valuable book!

The Internet began as a private network connecting government, military, and academic researchers. As such, there was little need for secure protocols, encrypted packets, and hardened servers. When the creation of the World Wide Web unexpectedly ushered in the age of the commercial Internet, the network's size and subsequent rapid expansion made it impossible retroactively to apply secure mechanisms. The Internet's architects never coined terms such as spam, phishing, zombies, and spyware, but they are terms and phenomena we now encounter constantly.

Programming detectors for such threats has proven difficult. Put simply, there is too much information---too many protocols, too many layers, too many applications, and too many uses of these applications---for anyone to make sufficient sense of it all. Ironically, given this wealth of information, there is also too little information about what is important for detecting attacks.

Methods of machine learning and data mining can help build better detectors from massive amounts of complex data. Such methods can also help discover the information required to build more secure systems. For some problems in computer security, one can directly apply machine learning and data mining techniques. Other problems, both current and future, require new approaches, methods, and algorithms.

This book presents research conducted in academia and industry on methods and applications of machine learning and data mining for problems in computer security and will be of interest to researchers and practitioners, as well students.
