This book was ok it was not as good as some of the others I've read. I have not read this series in order. I read the wolf who hatched an egg first. The the shark who rode the sea horse. Then the two books about the lynx brothers . Those books are better. But this ones ok!

About the Author

Philip V. Bohlman is the Mary Werkman Distinguished Service Professor of the Humanities and of Music, and Honorarprofessor at the Hochschule f�r Musik und Theater Hannover, Germany. Among the awards for his wide-ranging publications are the Edward Dent Medal of the Royal Music Association, the Berlin Prize of the American Academy in Berlin, the Donald Tovey Memorial Prize of Oxford University, and the Derek Allen Prize for Musicology (for the first edition of Focus: Music, Nationalism, and the Making of the New Europe) from the British Academy, to which he was elected as a Corresponding Fellow in 2007.

"Die weisse Rose" a powerful voice

A wonderful book. I stumbled across this when looking for materials for my senior group who'd just seen "Sophie Scholl" with me. Unfortunately so much background info currently available is either in uni level German or Wikipedia style overview. I wanted something that gave a feel of the motivations and character of the people involved. This is it.

The German is wonderfully accessible for senior groups. Written as if Inge Scholl is sitting talking to you. No heavy political discourse, more "this is how it was for us as a family". You see what happened in the 30s that steadily led the characters to the point they could take no more and had to do something other than wringing their hands on the sidelines. You see how Nazism permeated life to the point that they saw doing nothing as a betrayal of conscience.

Of the 202 pgs only the first 75 are a telling of the "weisse Rose" story till 1945. Short but very clear and readable so you get a feel of the timeline and how fast it progressed once they made the move into political action. You also get a feel of their intellect and passion, and the role of "Vater" as parent, Fuhrer, Land and God.
The sections that follow are: the eight Flugblatter fliers; the two main trials (Scholl/Probst and Schmorell/Huber/ Graf); eye witness testimonies; reactions and voices.
It's a fascinating read. Highly recommended.

A different view of Hitler's Germany

This book is a very different view of WWII. You get to see Germany from the view of young adults resisting Hitler. These people grew up in Germany following Hitler, participating in the Hitler Youth until they were old enough to realise the wrongs the Germans were doing to the world. The reading goes quickly because you become so engrossed in the story. It is a very good read, and after reading Anne Frank it makes you view the Germans differently.

Arrived earlier than expected, BUT it's listed as "English and German" I expected it to be in both English and German text.

It is only German. I studied German to a conversational level, but it was nearly 13 years ago. I am fascinated by the White Rose story. I have the documentary, both in English and German. I had hoped this book was in the original German and with an English translation alongside. I have the English translation of this edition already, but I had hoped I could read the two side by side in a single edition. I feel I was misled. Still, meh. I'm delighted to own the original German edition, written by the sister of the students of the White Rose. Four stars, for feeling misled. Otherwise, BRAVO!

Excellent for its thin size

As a small-school librarian, I buy biographies/autobiographies for the library from time to time, but try to stay away from controversial people whose lives are not worthy of emulation. Am I judging? Perhaps, but I'm the keeper of fantasies and moral values. Johnny Depp falls into that category. Which category? He certainly has been controversial, but he has lived a life of his own choosing, following his own drummer, if you will, crossing and burning bridges of his own making, and certainly keeping fantasies alive for both himself and his fans. Moral values? Following his own dreams and not what is expected or expedient puts him down as morally steadfast. Being true to his calling, his wife and children also makes him steadfast.

So, can a 32-page book tell enough about Johnny Depp, especially for the fourth-grader who needs to create a report about a biography? Yes, he/she can. I now know quite a bit about Mr. Depp. His first famous role as an actor was "Edward Scissorshands," one of the strangest, most poignant movies ever made, with the actor in my favorite role for him. I oft wondered if he made only films which disguised his looks. This book tells the reader how adverse the actor is to photo-hounds and how they ruined his relationship with Winona Ryder.

From age 6 on, his family of two parents and four other siblings moved 30 times, making him the perpetual "new kid." Suffice it to say that these disruptions of his young life and education greatly impacted his life.

It was his nightclub where his friend, River Phoenix, died of an overdose of drugs. He, too, became troubled with drugs, alcohol, and wild life. The night he nearly died changed his life forever. That was in 1994.

Depp has a fantastic list of films to his name, including the two "Pirates of the Carribbean," "Nightmare on Elm Stree," "Finding Neverland," and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape."

He currently lives in the countryside in France with his wife and two children.

A great story of Knights & Dragons....and more....

I really enjoyed reading this book which describes a realm of knights, swords and dragons throwing the reader back into the mists of time. It also tells the story of two souls and their destiny coming together. There is Aric, Prince of Astria and Denys who is a herbalist and an archer.
As the book unfolds and their relationship grows more is revealed of the danger they face together from those around them and each other. Secrets are revealed and adventure ensues as you read on.
I like how Anne has weaved the Dragon mythos in this book and how this affects both the main characters. Dragons are awesome creatures that can charm the heart of any story but also in this tale the human part is also important to keep love and identity alive. I can't wait for part 2.
I thorough recommend this book to anyone who yearns for adventure, love and magic. Dive in and grab a copy and let your imagination take flight!
