Hunter's Run, by George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dozois, Daniel Abraham

Running from poverty and hopelessness, Ramn Espejo boarded one of the great starships of the mysterious, repulsive Enye. But the new life he found on the far-off planet of So Paulo was no better than the one he abandoned. Then one night his rage and too much alcohol get the better of him. Deadly violence ensues, forcing Ramn to flee into the wilderness.

Mercifully, almost happily alone—far from the loud, bustling hive of humanity that he detests with sociopathic fervor—the luckless prospector is finally free to search for the one rich strike that could make him wealthy. But what he stumbles upon instead is an advanced alien race in hiding: desperate fugitives, like him, on a world not their own. Suddenly in possession of a powerful, dangerous secret and caught up in an extraordinary manhunt on a hostile, unpredictable planet, Ramn must first escape . . . and then, somehow, survive.

And his deadliest enemy is himself.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Martin (Song of Ice and Fire series), Dozois (Strange Days) and Abraham (A Shadow in Summer) revisit classic themes of exploration, exploitation and what it means to be human in this gritty SF adventure. Humanity has finally reached the stars, only to find that all the best spots have been claimed by other races—the Silver Enye, Turu, Cian and others. Human colonists serve as world-building crash-test dummies, dropped onto empty planets deemed too dangerous or inconvenient for other races, to pave over whatever marvels and threats evolution had put there. On the misbegotten colony planet of So Paulo, ore prospector Ramon Espejo has no illusions, especially about how the Enye view humanity. Then Ramon murders the wrong man in a drunken fight and takes off into the wastelands to avoid the Enye authorities. Once in the outback, he discovers he's not the only one trying to hide from the Enye—and that the deadly cat-lizards called chupacabras are far from the worst dangers on So Paulo. This tightly written novel, with its memorable protagonist and intriguing extrapolation, delivers on all levels. (Jan.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
In music, supergroups of established artists are rarely greater than the sum of their parts. The same often goes for science fiction, but critics agreed that these three authors beat the trend by producing a tight, consistent novel. Whether because of Martin€™s decades of collaborative work, Dozois€™s long career as an editor, or Abraham€™s fresh prose style, every reviewer said the book seemed as if it were written by one person. The only complaint came from reviewers who had read an earlier, novella-length version of the story; they felt that expanding the story enriched it somewhat, but not by much. While it would be hard to match Hunter€™s Run with any of these authors€™ previous works, it can certainly be called a successful experiment€"and a compelling SF novel.

“[A] tense interspecies battle of wits with tangy atmospherics and a bleak lesson on the meaning of freedom. A.” (Entertainment Weekly)

“[S]o sharp you have to be careful not to cut your fingers while turning the pages...HUNTER’S RUN is the sort of tense, what’s-gonna-happen-next battle of cultures and wits that keeps you guessing. And, perhaps, rekindles your childhood love of sci-fi.” (The Star Press (Muncie, Indiana))

Not "Song of Ice and Fire" or "Long Price Quartet"
By Rick H
I bought this book because I love George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (who doesn't? -- see A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)) and his student Daniel Abraham's excellent Long Price Quartet (see A Shadow in Summer (The Long Price Quartet)). I was not familiar with Gardner Dozois.

Do not expect either series. Sure, this is sort of a science fiction book, in that it takes place on a colonized planet, has an alien race that shuttles humans around, and vehicles that hover. This is the story of one man's flight from his crime, his discovery of and capture by another alien race, and his struggle to get free -- all the while having to come to terms with who he is, what is right and wrong, and where and how things belong. The evolution of this character in his struggle to survive is fascinating -- and while it sounds like a very introspective story, it's still a solid adventure.

This is a bit of a brainy book - folks who like Fantasy or Science Fiction for fast paced action may not like this. This is for people who like serious character and story development. And, of course, Martin just happens to be a master at that.

Highly recommended.

Hunter's Run is well plotted, fast paced and great entertainment
By J. C. Amos
This is another book that I bought based solely on who wrote it. I love Martin and Abraham is also a great writer, though I had never heard of Dozois prior to this. I didn't know what I would think, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Hunter's Run has action, drama, humor and bizarre aliens; just about all you could ask for in a great sci-fi book. Is it a masterpiece? I still can't quite decide...

My favorite part of this book is what most reviewers seem to dislike the most: the main character. Ramon Espejo is a pretty despicable human being. He's a murderer and a criminal, but I'll be damned if he doesn't provide an entertaining point of view. Maybe I've gotten to the point where I've read too much typical fiction with do-gooder protagonists that an a**hole is just what I needed. And even if he is an a**hole, he is funny and has some great dialogue, especially with his travelling companion/captor (who for the sake of not spoiling, I will not reveal here.) And as the story progresses, even though he is still sort of despicable, he does have an epiphany of sorts that changes him as a person. On the basis of how he thought and how he acted, his decisions were believable and I thought his progression as a character was really well done.

The actual story, which I can't speak much on because I'd give it away, is also well done. It is a nice tight plot that flows well from start to finish. There is some good action and some crazy situations, but given the circumstances, there is nothing unbelievable. By the end of Hunter's Run, I was left a little disappointed that it had ended but in no way dissatisfied with the ending. There are no loose ends and it is its own complete story.

This really teeters on the edge between a 4 star and a 5 star book. I'd have to say I'll give it 4.5 stars and curse Amazon once again for not having a more intricate rating system. Pretty much the only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 is that considering the prose of Martin and Abraham, the writing could have been better. Don't get me wrong, the writing isn't bad, it's just not on par with Song of Ice and Fire or Abraham's very eloquent style in the Long Price Quartet. Toward the beginning of the story, the writing seemed a little lazy and hurried, like there were more details that could have been included. But as the story progressed and the main character began to develop, the writing almost seemed to get better, so perhaps all of this was intended. The same can almost be said about the story. It's rare that the reader actually wants more time to be spent in the development of the characters and setting before the story really gets started, but I felt at the beginning it moved a little too quickly. Once the story gets moving however, I forgot all about that. I think the only other thing that keeps it out of 5 star territory is that it's not quite as grand nor the scope quite as great as some of the books that I consider 5 star.

I'd really be interested to know how three authors actually piece together a book like this, what the writing process is. (Okay, so let's take a drunken a-hole down on his luck, a backwater prospecting planet, and some really bizarre aliens... go!) In any case, the outcome is great. Despite my somewhat indecisive misgivings, I'd recommend this book to any sci-fi fan.

Great Stuff
By S. M Stirling
Usually a collaboration, and still more a three-way collaboration, is less than the sum of its parts. These three have produced a book as seamless and fresh as one by an individual writer -- and a very good one. It's an intriguing modern-space-opera setting, combined with a frontier tale and a 'first contact' story with some very intriguing aliens. But the hero (or given his character, the protagonist) steals the show even from the strange world aand stranger aliens. Bravo!

Hour of the Lion (The Wild Hunt Legacy Book 1), by Cherise Sinclair

“Put Victoria with two Alpha brothers, and wow, oh wow, your socks will be knocked off.”

First a Marine, then a black ops agent, Victoria Morgan knows the military is where she belongs…until a sniper’s bullet changes her life. Trying to prove she’s not washed up, she rescues a young man from kidnappers. When the dying boy transforms into a cougar—and bites her—she learns of an entire hidden society. He begs her to inform his grandfather of his death and to keep the secret of the shifters’ existence. She can’t refuse, but what if the creatures pose a danger to the country she swore to protect?

As guardian of the shifter territory, Calum McGregor wields the power of life and death over his people. When a pretty human female arrives in their wilderness town, he and his littermate become increasingly concerned. Not only is the little female hiding something, but she is far more appealing than any human should be.

While investigating the shifters, Victoria begins to fall in love with the werecat brothers and the town as well. For the first time in her life, she might have a real home. Her hopes are crushed when a deadly enemy follows her from the city, and the shifters discover she knows their secret. Now nobody is safe—least of all Victoria.

With a fantastic heroine, two yummy heroes and a whole host of fun side characters... this slick paranormal romance came at me out of nowhere and knocked my socks off.

Unbelievable Good
By Rare Reviewer
I believe that this is the first time that I have actually agreed with all the 5 star reviewers. It's almost unbelievable that an author that usually writes books in the BDSM genre can so sucessfully transfer into the paranormal field. Cherise Sinclair has always been on my buy list since I read her 1st novel. Her novels are always well written with stong characters, intense emotions, fast moving plots and HEAs.

Pros:
Intense emotions that draws the reader in so well
Alpha males that make you want to hunt down some of your own
Originality where the reader is drawn into the world or situation, where things are so believable.
Intense love scenes

Cons:
The love scenes are graphic in all her books - which does not bother me - but if such books make you uncomfortable than be forewarned.
The males are Alpha males and there is a taste of D/s in this book. It's done with style in her books, in my opinion, but others may find it too much.

The Cons are not really Cons to me, but other readers may not feel comfortable reading such material. This is a very intense believable novel that I could not put down until the very last page. Her books are very well edited but I did come across one mistake where "way" was misspelled "yay" but that was it and I believe the first in any of her books. The pace is fast, the plot believable and the love scenes HOT.

War, romance and weres
By Terri Doughty
Victoria Morgan may not have been at full strength but she wasn't exactly helpless. Finding herself in a basement with what appears to be a former Marine torturing a teenage boy didn't make her happy. Through skill and dumb luck, Vicki is able to free herself and the teen, Lachlan. Unfortunately, Lachlan is hurt worse than she thought and dies before help comes. Before he dies though, Lachlan makes her promise to visit his grandfather in Cold Creek.

While on the surface this seems like an easy task, it isn't. Lachlan wasn't just a teenage boy. He shifted into a mountain lion! Vicki couldn't believe her eyes and wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it. The other problem is the Marine's employer is a mob boss and has a lot of power. Vicki isn't looking to get herself killed and if they find her they will. She's also promised not to tell anyone about people being able to shift into animals. Without Lachlan's name or his grandfather's name and only a town's name to go on, Vicki's going to have to really work to locate Lachlan's grandfather!

Her introduction to Cold Creek isn't her finest hour either. She's caught by the local sheriff, Alec McGregor, going through a window into the house she's getting ready to rent. Good thing the realtor showed up before she was locked up. The sheriff's kind of cute and Vicki could be interested.

Thinking finding a job at the local bar might get her the information she needs to locate Lachlan's grandfather seems like a good idea. Calum, Alec's brother and owner of the bar, doesn't usually hire humans. They aren't able to deal with a drunk were plus some of the older weres didn't like humans. Yet, Vicki has already proved she's capable to handling herself when she helped removed a drunk trucker that was threatening his teenage daughter.

Humans usually don't smell desirable to weres, so why does Vicki smell so good to Alec and Calum? Vicki is also seeing a small creature living in the tree in front of her rental house. What is going on? With Lachlan dead, will the man in the suit and the former Marine give up trying to capture a were or has their hunt just started?

Ms Sinclair is well known for her BDSM stories. If that is what you are looking for, don't get this book. This book has little to no BDSM in it, no fetish clubs and no familiar characters. What this story does have is awesome characters, gripping emotions and a bunch of hot shifters.

These characters are terrific. Vicki has been in Iraq and works as a spy. She has no close friends or family and lives to serve her country. She doesn't see her life ever changing and figures she'll die in the line of duty. She is capable of protecting herself and able to make decisions quickly. Calum runs the region where he lives. He was once married but his life mate died. He has a 13 year old daughter who he spoils. Calum is use to being in charge and expects his orders to be followed. Alec is Calum's littermate but much more laid back. He doesn't mind following Calum's orders but he's got his own power which can make him very dangerous if you get on his wrong side.

The world that this story is set into is ours. The thought is the shifters live outside large cities and pretty much keep to themselves. No one knows that they are around and they will kill to keep their secret. Birth rates are very low and each new were is a welcomed addition. Gatherings are held each month for single weres to meet up and have as much sex as they can in hopes of a pregnancy. Littermates sharing a life mate is not uncommon and is usually expected.

One of Ms Sinclair's signature trademarks in stories is the intense emotions. This story is no different. You find yourself wrapped up in Vicki's struggles between her loyalties to the organization she works for and her increasing feelings towards Alec and Calum. Vicki shocks herself at the strong maternal feelings she has towards Calum's daughter. Alec and Calum want Vicki, separately and together, and their strong desires come across without question. Vicki's confusion on how she could have sex with two men comes across just as strong.

Though a vastly different genre, Ms Sinclair shows her mastery in story telling with this outstanding and excellent story. She's able to take three strong characters and have them mesh into a single unit, though not until working through lots of issues and problems. Even secondary characters draw readers interest until you can't help but want more books.

I can't praise this book enough. I started it after work and couldn't put it down until I finished it, even though that was well after when I normally went to sleep. Though completely different from her other stories, this one is in a class of its own.

If you like shifters, intense and intriguing stories and a happy ending, take a change and read this one. For Ms Sinclair's regular fans who don't read shifter stories, give this one a chance. You won't be sorry!

Another Outstandingly Excellent Book from Cherise Sinclair
By Janet
I love everything that Cherise Sinclair writes, and this book is no exception. Alhtough different than her normal BDSM genre of books, this book still has her signature style of strong plot and outstanding character development. Reading this book is like opening a door into another world, stepping through and living through the words. Even though she has positioned this as a stand alone title, I hope she continues this as a series and brings us another Cold Creek Shifter book.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2—When Ollie sees the first flakes fall, he and his siblings scamper off to roll and dig in the snow-covered field. All of a sudden a large dog approaches and barks at them. Frightened, the three puppies run off, and Ollie runs so far that he gets lost. An owl perched in a tree advises him to follow his tracks home, but cautions that he needs to hurry before the falling snow covers them. When he reaches the edge of the woods, the pup slides down an icy slope, encounters fox cubs, and soon realizes that he is unsure of how to proceed. Cold, hungry, and tired, he lies down under a bush. About to close his eyes, Ollie hears his mom call his name. Home safe and sound, he falls fast asleep. Soft-focus illustrations lend a quiet, dreamy, wintry quality to the attractive spreads. The puppies are appealing with wide-spaced eyes and large black noses. Children will empathize with the dog's ordeal and be reassured by Ollie's family's determination to find him.—Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

From Booklist
There are many, many stories about lost little ones (bethey children or animal stand-ins) finding their way home. This one treads no new ground, but the pictures make it irresistible. Here, a golden pup named Ollie ventures out into his first snow. Mom tells him not to go far,and for a while, along withsiblings Sam and Sheba, he frolics in this new environment. Then a strange barking dog arrives, the pups scatter, and Ollie finds himself alone in a very white world. Some animals try to help him, whileothers hinder. Though there’s some real tension here, listeners will expect a happy ending, and they will find one, just as Ollie eventually finds his way home. The large paintings feature icy blue backgrounds swirled with snow. Ollie, looking a bit like an adorable stuffed animal but with real expression on his face, slips and slides across the spreads. With itsshort text and pictures that are appealing even from afar, this is a solid choice for group storytimes. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Ilene Cooper

This heartwaming story of Ollie, the little lost pup, is one you won't want to pass up!
By Deb
The first snow of the year began to fall. Ollie stuck his nose outside the barn door and PLOP! There was something cold and wet on the end of his nose. Ollie was a puppy who had never seen snow before and neither had Sheba and Sam. They all begged their mom to let them go out and play in it for a while, but like all mothers, she told them "don't go too far." They "skidded and slid across the icy farmyard." The rolled and raced and jumped all around. They were having a wonderful time playing until all of a sudden a strange dog with a "HUGE bark" scared them half to death and they all ran for their lives!

They ran so fast that Ollie became separated from his brother and sister and found that he was lost in the snowy landscape, way away from the farmyard. "Too whit, too whoo, who are you?" An owl peered down from a tree and told him to quickly follow his pawprints back home. He tried, but the snow was coming down quickly enough to cover them. "Swoosh!" He found himself slipping and sliding down a hill into the midst of some unfriendly fox cubs who told him to "clear off!" Was he ever going to get home to warmth and comfort of his own bed?

This is a lovely, heartwarming story with art work to match. The charming illustrations are adorable, and Ollie's expressive face adds just the right touch to the tale. This is a perfect cuddle up story for a cold winter day, especially when the first snowflakes start to fill the air. A new puppy (of the stuffed variety) and this book would make a perfect gift!

Empowering schools and teachers
By Lejf Moos
This books goes against the mainstream in England. At this point in time Government and OFSTED are keen on controlling and managing schools and mistrusting teahchers and head teahcers. This books has explored ways of evaluating and valuing what really matters in schools and learning and has developed a range of methods and tools for teachers and schools to use when striving to make their schools even better places for learning. And not only has the author ecplored ways and means he also gives the reader many arguments for whay to listen to the schools themselves: Students, teachers, head teachers and parents. This is a basic book for professionals and stakeholders who want to develop their school.

The Shape of a Pocket, by John Berger

John Berger writes: 'The pocket in question is a small pocket of resistance. A pocket is formed when two or more people come together in agreement. The resistance is against the inhumanity of the new world economic order. The people coming together are the reader, me and those the essays are about - Rembrandt, Palaeolithic cave painters, a Romanian peasant, ancient Egyptians, an expert in the loneliness of certain hotel bedrooms, dogs at dusk, a man in a radio station. And unexpectedly, our exchanges strengthen each of us in our conviction that what is happening to the world today is wrong, and that what is often said about it is a lie. I've never written a book with a greater sense of urgency.'

From Publishers Weekly
This volume collects more recent essays that first appeared in a variety of languages in publications in Zurich, Madrid, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Helsinki and London. Since very few readers, even Berger fanatics, will have the linguistic skills to have experienced these texts in their original translated versions, it is useful to have them collected and available here in English. The 24 essays include impressions of artists such as Rembrandt, Degas, Michelangelo, Kahlo and Brancusi. There are the familiar farmyard observations from Berger as the rural dweller in the French Alps. Others, like the one titled "The Chauvet Cave" after a French site of prehistoric art, seem diffuse and free-form rather than focusing on a single subject. On Rembrandt, Berger is in his element, as if speaking about someone he knew personally: "obstinate, dogmatic, cunning, capable of a kind of brutality. Do not let us turn him into a saint." Some of the essays integrate the author's now-shaky memory, as when he writes, "I have the impression, that just after Brancusi's death in 1957, I visited his studio...." And he manages to get off yet another shot against his pet peeve Francis Bacon, in whose art, according to Berger, "pain is watched through a screen, like soiled linen being watched through the round window of a washing machine." Such overstrenuous attacks on a demonstrably major painter are tedious, but most of the present book, integrating the author's own aging and physical decay, rings as true as the rest of his much-appreciated work. (Dec. 28) Forecast: This book is a sure thing for Berger's regular readers and for larger campus art collections. For an extra $8.50, though, casual readers may prefer to pick up the above Selected, revealing the writer in his fierce prime and providing more than twice as much material.

From The New Yorker
For some fifty years, the reclusive British writer John Berger has thought a great deal about art and artists, and this collection of essays includes a moving tribute to Frida Kahlo and a brilliant meditation on the achievement of the Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. But everything Berger has written—essays, novels, criticism, screenplays—has been filled with his passionate concern for what used to be called the state of man. That preoccupation is on every page here, whether he is recalling the patience of Antonio Gramsci or discussing Degas's nudes. When Berger was young, his urgent left-wing politics sometimes thrust him into the role of provocateur. Now he is no less committed to making the hidden visible, but his sensibility has widened and deepened; his exegesis of the significance for us of the Fayum portraits, discovered in Egypt in the late eighteen-hundreds, is especially piercing. Berger is one of the few writers who answer questions we don't know to ask.

Islamic Architecture: Form, Function, and Meaning, by Robert Hillenbrand

This beautifully conceived and produced survey of Islamic architecture explores the glorious world of the caravansarai, mausoleum, palace, and mosque. Focusing on the multifaceted relation of architecture to society, Robert Hillenbrand covers public architecture in the Middle East and North Africa from the medieval period to 1700. Extensive photographs and ground plans― among which are hundreds of newly executed three-dimensional drawings that provide an accurate and vivid depiction of the structure―are presented with an emphasis on the way the specific details of the building fulfilled their function.

Included are chapters on religious and secular architecture and the architecture of tombs. Each building is discussed in terms of function, the links between particular forms and specific uses, the role of special types of buildings in the Islamic order, and the expressions of different sociocultural groups in architectural terms. Here the student or historian of Islamic architecture will find an astonishing resource, including Maghribi palaces, Anatolian madrasas, Indian minarets, Fatimid mausolea, and Safavid mosques, each rendered in lavish illustrations and explained with incomparable precision.

An excellent book that needs a prequel
By Adil Sharag-Eldin
This is an excellent book about Islamic Architecture. It offers a comprehensive coverage of building typologies, their influences, and the context (historical and geographic) within which these types can be found. However, I cannot use it as a textbook alone. I need to complement the content with other sources that talk about cultural context as both determinants and modifiers of the built form. I complement the book with George Michell's "Architecture of the Islamic World", the work of AlSayyad, Rapport, and many of the published work of the Aga Khan program.

A Highly Regarded Text Written by a Leading Scholar
By TJ
This is a classic text written by a leading world authority. It is informative, clearly organized, and factual. It is a book cited and referenced by the best scholars on Islamic architecture. The author's spouse, Carole Hillenbrand, is another world-class scholar on Islam. (What do you think they discuss at dinner?)

There is some confusion about editions. In fact, there really is only one edition (1994), that has subsequently been reprinted to seem as if it is more recent. Thus the book does not include any significant work for the last 20 years. Understand that regardless of the date or edition that you think you are buying, it is in fact 1994.

The book is designed for those who are very serious about the field. It is not for beginners or for a general overview.

Line drawings are nice, but the book undersells the power of the architecture and its imagery by limiting the amount of color printed photos. Also, diagrams to explain the cited precedents would help laymen comprehend the underlying characteristics in a more holistic way.
