An almost palpable shock -

I've read a number of Graham Greene's more acclaimed and "serious" novels and had a variety of reactions, from "loved it!" ("The End of the Affair") to "couldn't get through a chapter" ("The Quiet American"). But none of these prepared me for "Stamboul Train." Modestly described as an "entertainment," and later more or less dismissed by its author, this novel turned out to be, truly, one of the most amazing and moving books I've ever read.
This is an early novel, but there's nothing raw about it. The characters are superficially "stereotypes," but the book turns out to be about the power that externally prescribed roles possess, in life as well as art. Each of the characters, from Myatt the "rich spoiled Jew" to Coral the plain, innocent chorus girl, turn out to be something different from their types, yet they're never wholly able to escape from them. I can't think of an author, except possibly Tolstoy, who does a better job conveying characters who believe two (or three or seven) things at the same time than Greene does here.
Greene does employ stereotypes, particularly of Jews and lesbians, and that might be one reason the book is out of fashion. Yet Greene explicitly grapples with and explodes the stereotype, in the case of Myatt. Even the lesbian lady journalist, who doesn't fare as well (Greene's portrayal of her borders on mean-spiritedness) is so richly characterized and individual that she takes on a life beyond the stereotype.
I haven't even touched on Greene's innovative use of point-of-view - a multi-faceted third-person, with sudden shifts hardly united by an overarching consciousness. The effect mirrors the way these "strangers on a train" slip in and out of each other's lives. It also produces one of the most amazing bedroom scenes I've ever read.

Modern Authors Should Learn From Greene

A young Jewish currant magnate who is only "a Jew" to Europeans; a virginal chorus-girl who is perceived only as a "nice pair of legs"; a newswoman who hates men for their arrogance; a self-impressed murderer; and a fugitive Communist leader are all riding a train whose ultimate destination is Istanboul. Greene skilfully weaves their stories together and apart, forcing the reader to ponder questions about love, sex, duty, and morality.

Early Greene novel hints at the greatness to come.

A sad cynicism lies at the root of Greene's dark humor in this very early (1932) novel, Greene's fourth novel and the first entertainment to be written and published for a wide audience. A Jewish businessman, a lesbian journalist, her rebellious young companion, a dancer in need of a job, a Socialist physician wanted in Serbia for treason, and an Austrian thief meet and interact aboard the Orient Express on a trip from London to Istanbul (Stamboul). Each person in this motley group hopes that some remarkable change will occur to him or her as a result of the trip, but though all eventually get their wish, fate has something devious up its sleeve for each one. These twists and turns, sometimes humorous and sometimes immensely sad, constitute the heart of the novel.

Unlike Greene's later novels, with their fully developed characters and religious themes, this novel's characters are often stereotypes, and the action is often designed simply to bring the characters down, showing that no matter what dreams or goals they may have, that ultimately they have no control over their destinies. Greene's later, much more intensely realized themes--sin and atonement, innocence and guilt, love of life and fear of death, piety and corruption, sex and religion--are missing here, and as the action unfolds and the characters are manipulated, the reader easily recognizes the "bones" of the themes which will later come into full flower in Greene's mature philosophical novels. As a series of tours de force, and as a glimpse into the creative process of a writer who, at this point, was just beginning to come into his own, this is an intriguing novel, loaded with insights, a fascinating and enjoyable read. A highly recommended read

This is my first book of inspirational poetry. All the poems contained in this book speaks about love, faith, hope, and gratitude. I love the way how the author vividly communicates her feelings in simple structured verses that inspires me, as a reader. Since I got this book, it has been my companion wherever I go. One poem read daily gives me such inspiration to go on with life. I am sure that whoever gets hold of this "one of a kind" book will never let go.

Excellent Introduction and Reference for Aviation

A couple of months ago, I decided that I wanted to learn to fly. Flying was something I have dreamed of doing since I was a little kid and I decided that now was the time. Before approaching a flight instructor I wanted to know a little bit more about flying. I looked at a number of books geared towards student pilots but was disappointed. Most books for students were either too simple (not enough info) or too much like a study guide (which I already had). What I wanted was something that introduced me to all aspects of aviation, not just the stick and rudder stuff. The Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge is just such a book. Flying is not just about aerodynamics. There is a significant amount of information that must be absorbed before ever getting into the left seat. Airspace regulations, airport procedures, communications, navigation, and flight planning, to name just a few, are all part of flying. Paul Illman not only covers each of these in depth but he does so in a way to show you how each are related to the other. Since meteorology is also integral to flying, any good pilot would also have to be a good weatherman. Illman covers this subject very well. I haven't looked at weather the same way since. (I have always been fascinated with explanations on the workings of nature.) This book provides a strong foundation of knowledge in all of these subjects and a number of others. Many of us dream of flying. But safe flying requires more than dreaming. Flying is a discipline. By covering all areas of aviation, and showing us how important knowledge in each of these areas is critical to safe flying, Illman gives us a much more accurate picture of what it takes to become a pilot. By emphasizing the responsibilities of the pilot we can better determine if we really want to become a Pilot In Charge. If you read and understand this book you will know whether or not flying is for you.
No one book can completely prepare you for flying. But this book covers enough to get you started with a firm foundation. I read this book from cover to cover before I began my using my study guides for the FAA exam. (I am currently using Gleim's Private Pilot study course, which I also recommend.) The Pilot's Handbook gave me a much better understanding of aviation and has greatly enhanced my learning. That Private Pilot certificate doesn't seem so far away.

not very good info

This book is written by an individual who is clearly not a even flight instructor. In fact, he gives some information that is NOt correct and may well get the student/pilot in dutch with Air Traffic Control.

As a flight instructor myself one of my students bought this to help himself with his radio work. The book suggests the use of "with you" in the inital call up to control.

The term "with you" is incorrect for several reasons: It is untrue the pilot is not with the controller.
Second, this term is NOT found ANYWHERE in the pilot-controller glossary as part of the AIM.

I have heard controllers correcting even airline crews for using this incorrect term.

If you buy this book and use it's terinology you WILL hear about it; probably from ATC, and your instructor if he/she is proficient in radion coimmunication, and almost definitaely from your examiner!

Excellent reference book on tai-chi

Mantak Chia has always been comprehensive in presenting his materials in a clear and logical way. It is one the best reference book for practitioners of tai-chi.

Tai-chi has become the no. 1 Chinese martial art system that has re-invented itself into a complete mind-body exercise system with the largest number of practitioners. One won't go far off if one simply practices one style of tai-chi form, and imitates the graceful movement of his sifu (if not enough, one can always go to youtube and learn and imitate the graceful movements of other sifu's). Since the mind of the practitioner is focused on the gracefulness of the form, possible psychological side effect can be avoided (like chi-kung/deep-meditation/kundalini syndromes) That is the wonderful part, and the reason for its popularity.

Having said that, a practitioner certainly can improve faster through following good guidelines like many in this book, for example:

1. Structural alignment: Tai-chi is usually practiced as a flowing circular movement system, which is essential for unimpeded chi-movement for system strengthening. Structure alignment of each position might easily be neglected by a beginning practitioner. Matak Chia advised "holding the (each) position" for up to five minutes. This is actually an important classical approach, often neglected by many contemporary "eager-to-progress" practitioners (or sifu's too!). In some Wu-style, there is a middle-way approach, in that a junior practitioner has to practice a square form first, which essential is a direct/straight-line movement between each position with holding for a few seconds.

2. Power training: the wonder of the tai-chi conditioning system is that power training can be done after graceful form training of structural alignment. Mantak Chia has offered some good training technique such as spiral, knee-twisting and rooting. (Of course, a tai-chi practitioner can also pick up other power training technique from other styles: like the very simple and effective method of fighting-style zhan zhuang of the I-style founded by grandmaster Wang).

3. Training for martial art: most practitioners for tai-chi do not come to tai-chi for its martial art aspect. Mantak Chia has presented a good introduction of how tai-chi practitioners can use the eight tai-chi forces, but more for information than for actual training. These are actually pre-combat training methods only. Tai-chi practitioners fighting in the ring will punch, evade, and kick like any stand-up fighter (one can browse the web and watch Wu-style master Mr. Wu fought in the ring with a famous White-crane master in Macao back in the 50's). For various reasons, some contemporary tai-chi masters (Mantak Chia NOT included) like to mystify tai-chi fighting power using fa-jing demonstrations (like throwing people up through simple touching) or even knocking people down through no contact distant chi power!

One caveat for folks who are ONLY interested to learn tai-chi from Mantak Chia's book: one can do without his other "promotions" (like healing love or chi-weight-lifting) to gain maximum benefits from one's tai-chi practice.

Another Gem from Mantak Chia

Over the last 25 years of so, my students and I have derived a great deal from a careful study of Mantak Chia's written works, and have had the great good fortune to work with several of his senior students.

Not only do most of his methods work very well, but much of his material has not been published elsewhere, except in some works in Chinese. I learned a few of the same exercises while studying in China and I was told that they came from oral traditions. That tends to give more credence to Mantak Chia's teachings. For example, one of the things that he emphasizes is the use of spiral "energy," that is not much mentioned in many books on Tai Chi and Qigong.

Tai chi was developed as both a martial art and a way to cultivate the physical body, subtle systems and spirit. People are often incredulous when they see the slow movements and hear that it is the basis of a martial art. But I have seen experts do some quite extraordinary things with Tai Chi: the key is the development and retention of internal "energy." I put quotes around the word energy, because it isn't really an accurate translation of the word "qi." Which is better translated as "influence." I have commented elsewhere that it's a bit of a misnomer to talk about "energy." This is not a semantic point, but rather something that can be very helpful in practice, particularly when using tai Chi for health and healing.

I prefer to use the term subtle "systems," to be a little more precise than saying "energies," for these subtle systems are composed of the inseparable twins:
1. Subtle energies and
2. The subtle fields that carry them.
Without energy the fields could not actualize, and without the fields, there would be nothing to carry the energy.

This book is full of excellent examples of how to stimulate and strengthen these subtle systems. Some other meditative practices, like kundalini, are not good at retaining the forces that you generate with these practices. Mantak Chia once said that kundalini yoga was a great way to heat a room!

There is a limit to how far you can go in Tai Chi and Qigong without a teacher, but this book will take you much further than most, and if you are already engaged in either type of practice, the book will give you a lot of helpful pointers.

Very Helpful instruction

I've only been practicing for a couple of years so my comments come from the perspective of a relative beginner. I find this book to be an excellent supplement to my teacher's instruction. The detailed descriptions of the 13 movement form are extremely helpful, particularly the explanations detailing the focus of spiraling energy in each movement, instead of focusing on what a given posture looks like when it's complete, he describes the process of achieving the posture. (not sure I've adequately described it).

I enjoy the practical approach to his writing style, easy to read but alot of information to absorb. Very accessible to a student at my level.

About the Author

Charles E. Wilson is a Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from the Newark College of Engineering, the M.S. in engineering mechanics from New York University, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He is a licensed professional engineer, and has been awarded fellowships by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Department of Energy and National Science Foundation.

Dr. Wilson has published papers in a number of journals and transactions. Textbooks he has authored and co-authored are widely used in the United States and Canada. English language versions are also published in Britain, Taiwan, India, and the Philippines, and translations are published in Korea and Mexico.

Dr. Wilson served as a U.S. Air Force electronics and armament officer, and as an engineer and consultant for a number of companies. He is often called on to investigate functional and design problems in vehicles, machinery, and consumer products. He has investigated and given expert testimony on auto, truck, bus, and ambulance accidents, and accidents involving elevators, hydraulic presses, welds, playground equipment, garden equipment, and truck-mounted machinery.

J. Peter Sadler is a Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Kentucky. He has previously held faculty positions at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the University of North Dakota. He received the B.S.M.E, M.S.M.E., and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Sadler is a registered professional engineer and a member of many technical societies. He served as Editor for dynamics for the Journal of Mechanism and Machine Theory and Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics and Robotics.

Dr. Sadler holds a U.S. patent related to predicting optimum machining coditions. His industrial projects and research include kinematics and dynamics, robotics, computer aided design, engineering optimization, and "lean" manufacturing.

What Abilities Define an Engineer?

Part of the answer is given by the program outcomes and assessment criteria of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology'. Engineering programs must demonstrate that their graduates have specific abilities. These include:

• an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
• an ability to analyze and interpret data
• an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs
• an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
• an ability to communicate effectively
• an ability to use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Goals of the Text

A course in the kinematics and dynamics of machinery provides many opportunities to develop the abilities listed above. This text is designed to help foster development and application of those skills. One goal is to develop the ability of students to formulate and solve problems in the kinematics and dynamics of machinery. Engineering tools used to achieve this goal include motion simulation software and general-purpose mathematical software. These tools relieve the designer of repetitive tasks and provide a powerful means of communicating results through graphs and animation simulations. An equally important goal is the development of an understanding of the implications of computed results. That is, what do the results mean; how can we improve the design? Knowledge gained in previous courses is reinforced when applied to problems in the kinematics and dynamics of machinery. For example, matrix methods become meaningful when applied to equations describing velocities and accelerations in a spatial linkage. The skills learned and sharpened in studying the kinematics and dynamics of machinery are carried forward, even to unrelated courses and to engineering practice.

Scope

The coverage of this text includes mechanisms and machines, basic concepts; motion in machinery; velocity and acceleration analysis of mechanisms; design and analysis of cams, gears, and drive trains; static and dynamic force analysis; synthesis; and an introduction to robotic manipulators. Practical applications are considered throughout the text. Example problems and homework problems involve engineering design and provide a basis for design courses to follow. Analytical and graphical vector methods are illustrated, as well as complex number methods.

The text illustrates the use of motion simulation software, mathematics software, and user-written programs to solve problem and to present the results in plotted or tabulated form.

There are also many problems that can be solved by "hand calculations," however, using only a scientific calculator and/or simple drafting tools. The latter group may be useful as short practice problems and examination problems when laptop computers are unavailable.

• Suggestions for "working smart," particularly with computers. Emphasis on computer-aided matrix solutions where appropriate
• Interpretation and assessment of results. Is it logical? Does it check? Let's compare results with another solution. What does it mean? What does the graph show?
• Practical design implications of results

Course Development

Professors who regularly teach the kinematics and dynamics of machinery will know what topics suit their students best. This note is for instructors who have not taught the course recently.

Most of the topics in this text can be covered in a three-credit-hour course given to engineering students who have completed a course in the statics and dynamics of rigid bodies. But a single course designed around the entire book would be likely to have insufficient depth. Instructors may decide to cover the parts of the text that they deem essential, and then select additional topics and solution methods according to goals set for their students. For example, either analytical vector methods or complex number methods may be used as a basis for writing computer programs to solve planar linkages. However, if analysis of spatial linkages is to follow analysis of planar linkages, then vector methods might be used for both.

For courses built around the use of motion simulation software and mathematics software, graphical methods are likely to be de-emphasized. For example, the velocity polygon might be used only to spot check a detailed analytical velocity analysis of a planar linkage. In a course concerning the kinematics and dynamics of machinery, uniformity of course content is not essential. Differences in emphasis and methods among university engineering departments may strengthen the "gene pool" of future engineers.

We have attempted to provide sufficient rigor and advanced material to challenge the student and provide a basis for further study. Student creativity may be fostered by the demands of the task, particularly if a few homework problems are expanded into open-ended design-type projects. Additional projects requiring creativity may be suggested by articles in technical publications or by an instructor's current research and consulting.

The kinematics and dynamics of machinery and the design of mechanisms involve modeling of physical systems. Relationships so developed have limits of applicability. The user of this text is urged to interpret the results of calculations, rather than simply obtain problem solutions. Stay away from this one.

I am using this book for my mechanical engineering course and it has been a disaster. I am constantly looking for other sources to help with current topics as this particular book does not cover them enough. There are also catastrophic typos in some of the example problems. The worst part is the fact that the authors chose to save paper because they keep referring you to figures from previous chapters. It is by far the worst book I had to use in my degree which is quite an achievement. I read amazon reviews prior to buying books and oftentimes I disagree with poor book ratings (some students are complaining about their own inefficiencies). However, I find myself writing my first review because I cannot take this horribly written book any longer. If you really have to buy the book for a course good luck to you, otherwise stay away from this literature.

Excellent book for designing mechanisms

The book also includes concepts and numerical methods used in kinematics and dynamics, a reader with some fundamental knowledge in programming like MATLAB, kinematics and dynamics could get acquainted with the book easily and develop multibody dynamics code.

A must read for everyone

As acclaimed by the late distinguished historian Howard Zinn, Derber is among the most astute social critics of our times. The essays in this book live up to Zinn's expectations. Here, Derber is reviving the critical sociological imagination, once embodied in the work of C. Wright Mills, of whom Derber is an heir. Derber's writings warn that an empire grounded in unrestrained competition, militarism, greed and consumption for consumption sake, with little concern for preservation of the commons, may be doomed. He observes a society where 1% of the population absorb about 50% of the wealth, whose governments masks itself as a democracy, while being closely allied with the 1% at the expense of 99%, perhaps 99.99....%, if you think globally. It is a government whose imperial militaristic ambitions coincide with the quest for worldwide economic domination among the corporate elite. Derber sees the planet and 99+% sacrificed, in a path that leads to immiseration, meaninglessness and alienation for the vast majority and risks destroying the entire biosphere. Yet Derber does not throw his arms in hopeless angst. Instead, he offers a vision of a far more fulfilling world and offers potential strategies through which it can be achieved. I urge EVERYONE (no exception) to carefully read this book.
