This is a pretty good anthology

I was given an ARC for an honest review. This is a pretty good anthology. There are 6 stories, all set at Christmas time, all dealing with shifters who find their mates, set in different parts of the world. I have to admit that some of the stories are a stretch for me because of how quickly some of them bond. My favorite was NOT EVEN A MOUSE by Dahlia Donovan. We aren’t talking about the usual wolf shifter in this story. We have a polar bear and a sugar glider. To quote my daughter, “It’s adorable!” Now not all stories are wolves/wolves. In SNOW'S CHRISTMAS WISH by Ashlea Rhodes you have a vampire and wolf and THE WITCH AND THE WOLF by C.C. Wood, the characters are self-explanatory.
Definitely a good choice when you love PNR romances with a happy ending set during Christmas. Oh and by the way, if you happen to know where I can get the necklace that Ink buys Snow in Snow’s Christmas Wish, let me know!!!

Six different shifter/mate stories by six different authors... built around Christmas times. I absolutely loved each and every one of the stories in this anthology!! In fact I'm already a HUGE fan of C.C. Wood's and now I want to read more material from the other authors in the book. Each and every one of the stories are very engaging from the minute you start, until they wrap up nicely. Perfect for reading when you don't have a long time to devote to a full book!

A wonderful little anthology of Christmas Spirit!

Winter's Moon by R. M. Gilmore - A werewolf clan from Montana shows up in California during the Winter Solstice festival, asking for the ability to make a pact with the other 6 clans, because they are the last 3 males of their clan. They arrive just before the celebrations start. It is fun to watch an Alpha female shifter say something innocent and then put her foot into it when she tries to clarify what she just said. Having been a former police member for shifters, it is wonderful to watch her realize that she is not just an Alpha, or former police person/were, but also a woman who is able to be loved and cherished. What happens that solidifies her decision after the celebration is over?

Pull of the Moon by Becca Lee - Another Alpha female shifter book, where she feels something is not quite right as she watches what she thinks is smoke rising in the distance. As the smoke gets closer, she realizes that it is dust from the road, that a car is coming in very fast. She prides herself on how she became the Alpha and how she runs her pack. What does the bearer of the news from her Uncle bring with him? What does it mean to her? What happens when Dane touches her hand, and she realizes who and what he is? What news does Dane bring to his mate that has her basically seeing red and ready to hunt down one of her own?

Not Even a Mouse by Dahlia Donovan - Kat is not a mouse but is a shifter, breaks into the best friend of her brother's apartment. Ready to decorate it to the 9's. What happens when she is caught by Declan in his apartment, then she runs and heads straight into her brother in the hallway? Declan yells something at Jack, that freaks Kat out and causes Jack a shock. What is it and what happens? How long have Declan and Jack, Kat's brother, known one another? How many years has Kat been sneaking into Declan's residence to decorate it? Why does he snap at her this year? What happens between them? He is a bear shifter, she is a glider. What happens with the gifts that he gives her, what does it symbolize?

Snow's Christmas Wish by Ashlea Rhodes - Snow is fleeing for her life, what happened to cause this? She is a wolf shifter without a pack now since she refused to mate to someone. Her father was the alpha, and her family is now dead. Ink is a vampire, and feels that someone or something is in his area. Where does Snow move to, in order to get away from Nate and what he has done? What happens with Snow and Ink? What happens when Nate shows up? Are Ink and Snow able to make a go of things, being two different types of paranormal beings? This book does have an HEA for snow, but is it with Ink, or does Nate succeed in killing Ink?

The Witch and the Wolf by C. C. Wood - Blake is a werewolf in the Dallas area. Candela is a witch from the Houston area that is visiting Dallas for the Yule Celebration with her family. Her aunt Fanella is hosting the celebration this year, and her Aunt Priscilla keeps trying to set her up with boring old Warlocks from the coven. Candela decides to get out of the house and finds a bar. She's sitting there with a drink when in walks Blake. Being an Empathic Witch, she drops her guard after a comment Blake makes and finds out what happened with the help of the bartender. What happens from there, you'll have to read about. Just know that you need to decide if their meeting was fate or not. What happens at the Yule Celebration? What does Candela find out from her aunt?

Cure for Christmas by Aimie Jennison - Caitlyn is a young woman who has been diagnosed with Cancer. The only thing her son wishes for is a cure for her from Santa. She runs into Blake in the mall as he is shopping with Harriet, Ryan's mate for the secret Santa gift for one of the submissive wolves of his Pack. What happens at the mall? Is it is a chance meeting or is it by design? Does Blake get a chance to talk to her again? Can he help her, or does she die? What happens when she gets really sick and ends up unconscious in the hospital, and Blake tries to call her but gets a doctor calling him back instead of her? Read the book to see what happens. It was a very touching story.

Needing a great story to slip into and escape for a while, I was delighted to see that Kimberley Freeman's latest, Ember Island had downloaded on my Kindle. Immediately, I was transported to Ember Island, a fictional place in Brisbane's Moreton Bay, and the struggles of internationally renown but reluctant writer, Nina, who, discovering her property on the island (once owned by her grandmother) has been damaged in a storm, arrives to oversee repairs. Only, the house isn't the only thing needing fixing. Nina is nursing a wounded heart and suffering from terrible writers' block and, as the story unfolds, readers learn she is burdened from carrying a guilty secret as well.

The story shifts gear back to the late 1800s and the life of orphaned Matilda Kirkland who, after her beloved grandfather dies, follows her new husband, Jasper, to Guernsey in the Channel Islands to take up life as a wife and all that entails. Only, when Tilly (as she is known) arrives, nothing is as it seems and her dream future with the dashing Jasper soon becomes a nightmare from which she must wake or perish.

Segueing between the two stories of two very different women, the connecting thread being Nina's grandmother, Eleanor or Nell, and the diaries she has left of her childhood on Ember Island, the reader is immersed in their separate travails and quest to find both love and peace, a place to settle their restless souls, but without sacrificing their sense of self.

While Freeman segues between the narratives and times, she doesn't compromise pace or plot and the reader is allowed the time to not only get to know the characters, but to enjoy the unfolding tale as well. At first, I confess, I found Nina a bit whiny, though I did appreciate the descriptions of the crippling doubt even a famous author experiences and her inability to shake these demons. Still, I also wanted to slap her and tell her to appreciate the success she clearly has had, the supportive people in her life and to just get on with it and stop complaining! It's testimony to Freeman's prose that I responded to Nina that way; she is a realised character and certainly, the further you get into the story the more you come to appreciate why Nina feels the way she does.

Tilly is both a product of her era and someone who struggles against the shackles of imposed gender roles and male authority but without sacrificing veracity. Sometimes, however, she is too easily seduced by those who don't have her best intentions at heart; the lessons she learns from them and their actions are hard indeed. The younger characters in the book, especially precocious Nell, are endearing and wise beyond their years.

This is a romance, and while it features good men and bad, it also explores female friendship and the ties that bind and those that are severed and why. I really enjoyed the female relationships and the love and trust and betrayal that are explored within these.

Overall, this is a marvellous page-turner over which I lost sleep trying to get to the end because I simply HAD to know what happened. Though I saw a couple of the twists, there were one or two I did not, and they quite took my breath away!

Anyone looking for a great read, pick up Ember Island, slip into its pages and escape - though here's a warning: you might not want to come back!

I must admit to liking books with a premise like the one in Ember Island - a present heroine finding herself through the help of a past relative. It's almost time travel but only through diary reading.

Nina is an author who is suffering from writer's block and so she sets off to the titular spot to try and find a way to write again. I have to admit that Nina is a bit of a pill. Very hard to like and rather whiny. While visiting the family home she finds her grandmother's diaries which takes the reader back in time to explore the story of Tilly, a young woman born in a time when women really had no control over their lives. Tilly marries but her husband is a louse and she finds herself running away for reasons I'm not going to share and she ends up on Ember Island as a governess to young Nell, the prison warden's daughter and Nina's great grandmother. As Nina learns about Tilly through those diaries she finds that perhaps some secrets need stay buried.

This is my first book by Ms. Freeman and I did enjoy it for the most part. It did drag in parts and it was confusing at times trying to keep the three women's stories going in my head. They do all come together in the end but at times I was a touch lost. As I wrote Nina was not overly likable and Tilly was not the easiest of characters either. Nell I found the be the most developed and the one I enjoyed the most. Unlikable characters are part of life but Nina didn't seem to grow, at least to me.

I enjoyed the parts in the past more than the ones in the present - I'm not sure precisely why. Perhaps because I just enjoy historical fiction more than I enjoy current fiction.

Interesting

This book starts off in the 1800's and the story of a young girl called Tilly, it then goes to this century and involves a girl called Nina, an author who is visiting Ember Island and resesarching her great-great grandmother's life. The story does flow and even though it goes between life now and the life in the 1800's it wasn't disjointed. An interesting book and being set in Australia I probably enjoyed it more.

Four years ago, after much pushing and persuading from the young people that I refer to as my spiritual sons and daughters, the 40 young leaders (all under the age of 40) I mentor from around the globe, finally forced me to join the world of social media.

I designed my statements to communicate leadership tools and life techniques mostly to the young leaders I was mentoring – most of them being Christian preachers, but some of them being business and political leaders from around the globe.

I called it "Dear #youngpreacher" and began to share the thoughts I wished someone had told me when I first started preaching as a boy, and later needed when I was leading groups as a young man. I incorporated the wisdom I gleaned from the many master preachers and accomplished leaders I have worked with or interviewed over the years. I also mixed in the insights garnered from the current crop of young preachers I know; many of whom are emerging as the top thought leaders of the millennial pulpit. I bound these thoughts into "tweets," and from my mobile device sent them around the world.

Like wildfire, the tweets began to spread; answering, in a small way, the massive need for mentoring of both young preachers and young leaders.

As we analyzed the early data, to our surprise, we observed that millions of people were viewing this material, and they weren’t all preachers. Other young leaders were benefiting by listening in on our "shop-talk" and the hashtag was gaining headway on its own. Hundreds of people began to both write me and tell me to, please elaborate more on these tweets. To release myself from the handcuffs of 140 characters and really drill down on these concepts in detail and example, they urged me to see my tweets as modern-day proverbs for their generation and to actually give these tweets and their generation the attention they deserved.

From these many requests was born this 30-Day Devotional. Stylized as modern-day proverbs and presented in categories to maximize their application, these tweets are designed to bless the life of the reader and to enhance their daily devotions.

I have laced these proverbs with strong Biblical references and my personal stories to enhance their relevance, and I am confident that this book will be a real blessing to your life.

Priceless Wisdom

If you are called to ministry, you have been called to read this book. Simple as that.

This book is the perfect book for anyone in ministry, not just for young preachers, but for ANYONE young person in ministry.

So often I would think, "How did Chris Hill get in to my head?!?" He relates so well to the thoughts and feelings of ministers that we might always say out loud.

In all seriousness, if you are called to ministry, you would be doing yourself and your ministry a favor by investing in yourself. This is the perfect to do that.

Incredibly Insightful

This is an incredible view of ministry from the perspective of a man of God that has traveled the globe as an evangelist and now pastoring to thousands as well. I feel that the wisdom being passed on here is absolutely integral to you in your growth as a leader. No nonsense advice as if you were sharing a meal or having coffee with Dr Hill. I suggest you get a copy and then give out copies as gifts to your peers and friends that want to see their work for the Lord multiply and become more effective.

Excellent book for Young Adults who have been called!

Amazing book for any young adult who has been called to preach. It opened my eyes not only to what I will face in the future but also I am not alone in what I am experiencing now. Pastor Chris Hill sends great encouragement to not give up on this journey the Lord has us on. I HIGHLY recommend it and will be rereading it again as part of my daily devotional :-)

FUN and yummy

I just received my copy of Recipies From Paladini Potpie. I love it. I own many cookbooks, but rarely use one because the recipies tend to be overly complicated and a bit snooty. This is an exception. I have already made the Italian Bread, which was delicious. I cannot wait to made the sourdough or the Olive Tapenade. What sets this book apart from other recipe books is not just the variety of foods, but the simplicity of the recipies, and the tips, clever comments and asides. I laughed out loud reading some of the recipies. Literally, out loud. (See Dishwasher Poached Fish, p33.) Even if you don't cook, this book is a great read...or a great gift.
