Excellent Classroom Edition

"The Essential Rousseau" is an edition of, as its name suggests, Rousseau's most essential works, including his "Discourse on the Arts and Letters" and "Discourse on the Origins of Inequality" in their entirity, as well as excerpts from other major works, including "The Social Contract" and "The Savoyard Priest". The translation is clear and accurate, the selection of tests is appropraite and accurately reflects what I would consider to be essential. There's a good brief sketch of Rousseau's life and work in the beginning, and a quick introduction to each work. All in all, this is a fine edition for assignment in the classroom and for students.

Innacurate Account of the Truth

Lowell Bair, while providing the "essential" works of Rousseau, fails to provide an accurate account of what it was Rousseau truly wanted to say. Refer specifically to the Social Contract Book II, Chapters VI and VII, pertaining to the law and to lawgivers. Bair, through his own interest decides to cut out nearly every instance that Rousseau made regarding religion and God. As a religious man, Rousseau felt that it was extremly pertinent that religion, though it may cause conflict played an essential role in the formation of a state and the laws that bind it. For, there can really be no secular state. Now Bair, decided to cut this out, in several instances leaving the reader to only infer that religion was deep rooted in his writing. Whereas, In the true reading of the work, it is obviously clear. I think that this is a twisted version of the truth, and through reviews like the other one stated, that people who do not know but would like to know these writers will become blinded by authors who corrupt and throw their own "perspective" and "translations" into texts like the "Essential Rousseau" by Lowell Bair. You want to read the true account, read the original works, and even better in the original language it was meant to be read in!

Superb Resource!

This book has been my food bible for many years and I continue to consult it regularly. With detailed info on everything from adukis to zucchini, I learned how to prepare squash and beans with this book, and discovered unconventional grains such as quinoa.

It was invaluable when my husband needed to find high-potassium foods. My mom was recently put on a very restrictive diet and this book contains nutritive content that's difficult to find elsewhere: potassium, phosphorus, sodium, protein, and calorie content for hundreds of whole foods.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call this book a lifesaver!

Whole Food Facts - Great Book

I really enjoyed reading Whole Food Facts- The Complete Reference Guide by Evelyn Roehl. This is a very well written and informative book. It speaks to Dairy Products, Fats and Oils, Fruits, Grains, Legumes, Nuts and Seeds, Sweeteners, Vegetables, Other Foods, Types of Diets, and the Value of Nutrients and Food Supplements. It explains WHAT they are, HOW your body uses them, How Nutritious are the Specific Foods. Sometimes the Book explains how to USE and STORE certain types of food and explaines the different types of a certain food, such as Fats and Oils. It further addresses the Vitamins found in each type if food and some additatives. It provides a guide for how long you can store fruit and the peak season of availability of the fruit. Toward the end, there is a section on Vitamins and their uses in the body that I found extremely interesting. It also recommended amounts needed for good health. I am very glad I bought this book as it is a great reference book. It even tells me how to prepare a few foods- not receipes, just preparation.

Serth has done an outstanding job putting together this easy to use, cook-book type heat transfer book. Excellent for both the practicing engineer or the student with prior knowledge of introductory heat transfer concepts. The book offers simple, yet elegant solutions couple with detailed explanations to some of the most commonly faced heat exchangers (shell and tube), reboilers (kettle and thermosyphon), condensers and general heat transfer problems encountered in industry. Flawless piece of literature, highly recommended!

Outstanding Book On Heat Exchanger Design

This book is a must if you are looking for design equations on reboilers, condensers, air coolers, and classic single phase shell-and-tube heat exchangers. There are many example problems worked throughout the text and it is very easy to follow and understand. The correlations for the shell side and tube side film coefficients are excellent. Very good investment.

Quick & Dirty: An enjoyable read on a sunny afternoon.

Opening Sentence: Kael paced the length of his private sleeping chamber, avoiding the plush emerald carpet and keeping to the uncovered stone floor at the edge of the room.

The Review:

In a world where vampires are known to some humans and almost worshipped by them even, live the seven vampire kings, each holding rule over their portion of the Earth. Surrounding each is a group of humans known as the Electorate, ones who have traded their services in deception and cover, along with their virgin daughters, in exchange for protection from death and disease, and those who would do them harm.

In the wilds of Ireland lives such a king, Kael the Fair, Warrior King of the Vampires, Chieftain of Clan MacQuillan. Every three months, to maintain his health and immortality, he must feed, But the donor, must be either his mate, or a mortal virgin, preferably in her twentieth year. It is this need that Kael despises the most. Ever since he lost his mate and child in childbirth, the Proffering is an unwanted necessity, and an unwelcome risk. You see, with the partaking of a human woman's blood is the chance that he will find his destined mate, and he is unwilling to risk another loved one, not when the war with their enemies is still at hand. So, he takes the blood of the Proffered by knife and only takes their virginity because he cannot fight the power inside him.

But, this time, something is different. Because this time, the Proffered really is destined to be his mate.

Shayla has been training for this moment for seven long years, has been dreaming of the day she could join the vampires and their helpers, and aid in the war against those who murdered her sister. When she is finally chosen to be the Proffered on her 20th birthday, she is ready and all too willing. But things do not progress as she has been told, and she is sent home untouched. She sees herself as a failure to her family and race, but all is not lost. Upon returning to her home, she finds that Kael has requested her return to his castle. She prepares to return, to perform her duty, but all is still not as she was told.

You see, despite his other plans, The King wishes to keep this one as his mate, for apparently it has been destined, and he cannot leave her or her magical mismatched eyes alone. What follows is a love story, true to good old Harlequin form, and a mating completed by one of the most amazing rituals I've read about. It's so strangely beautiful.

In the Service of the King is a wonderful light read, and I hope that I will most certainly enjoy the next installment, Seduced by the Vampire King, which comes out in June 2012.

A Fantastic Short Story

When I read the synopsis of the book, I was a little skeptical of how Shayla is eager to give Kael, Warrior King of the Vampires anything to please him. I thought the story was going to be farfetched. Why would a woman be willing to give this Vampire King, someone she never met, anything he wishes, including her virginity? But damn! Laura Kaye blew me away with this wonderful story!!

Kael can only have the blood of a human virgin or his mate. He lost his mate 300 years ago to the Soul Eaters and he is determined to never take a mate again. Every few months he goes through the Night of the Proffering in which the Proffered (a human female virgin who has trained many years for this one night with the King) is brought to him so he can feed. Kael dreads this night but knows he must feed, because his warriors will not feed until he does. Kael and his warriors need their strength in order to fight against the Soul Eaters, so even though he hates it, Kael will feed from the Proffered. This time he finds the Shayla waiting for him and Kael's life will be forever changed.

Shayla (also known as the Proffered) has dedicated her life to the cause of defeating the Soul Eaters. Soul Eaters are evil vampires that drain the blood from humans and consume their souls by drinking through the last stutters of their heart. Then they rip out the heart and eat it. Kayla's sister was brutally raped and murdered by Soul Eaters, and since that day, Kayla has decided she would do whatever she could to aid Kael and the Vampire Warriors in their fight against the Soul Eaters. Since Shayla knows she could never fight and kill them, she decides to become a Proffered and aid the Warrior King of the Vampires in any other way she can.

I LOVED this story. Once I started it, I could not stop reading it until I was finished. Even though it was a short story, I felt that it was not rushed. I loved the chemistry between Kael and Shayla. I also loved Liam, Kael's right hand warrior and the only person close to Kael. I hope that he will get a story of his own. My only complaint is that I wish this was not a short story because I would have loved to read a full length novel of Kael and Shayla.

I give "In The Service Of The King" 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a lovely paranormal romance novella. The tenderness displayed by the main characters, Kael and Shayla, was so passionate. Kael is the fair warrior king of the vampires and Shayla is the chosen blood donor for the vampire king. When Shayla enters the room to feed her lord for the first time, Kael has uncontrollable urges that cause him outrage and confustion. For you see, he has vowed never to mate again with anyone. Until he meets his match and mate Shayla. And so the journey begins with an erogenous encounter between the two that are destined to be together for life...

Hot, steamy mating ritual included...Recommend!

Great illustrations, awesome scope!

I bought these texts for my classroom (since we have no budget and no books) based off of another Amazon buyer's recommendation, and I'm so glad that I did. Thank you, whoever said that it was an outstanding text! You're right. The National Geographic additions really help to capture wandering student attention, and the writing is clear and a little challenging for 8th graders. Lots of chapter reviews, which I appreciated, as well as test prep questions and vocabulary word banks. Good stuff!

a great text

I am using this book for homeschooling. It is well written, detailed and readable. I like the way it is organized, so it makes teaching Science pretty easy for me. We are just following this book as a framework, and supplementing with hands on investigations (such as identifying rocks, etc.) and intenet investigations (such as weather patterns, plate tectonics, etc.), just to show some real applications of this information.

We bought this earth science book because it is used in our child's ninth grade earth science class. It is magnificent and has a readable text profusely illustrated with colored photographs, maps, and charts; and a great table of contents, index, and glossary. We would want it for our home library even if it were not used in school. We are pleased with our "like new" used copy that we obtained through Amazon. It is very convenient to have this rather heavy book at home, thus saving our child from having to carry it back and forth to school.

More than five decades have lapsed since September 1960, when African American Muslim leader Malcolm X welcomed Cuban President Fidel Castro to a midnight meeting at Harlem s Black-owned Hotel Theresa. Castro and his delegation had come to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, but the management of the Manhattan hotel they had booked refused to house them. Upon learning of their plight, Malcolm invited the Cuban emissaries to come uptown to Harlem, where he claimed they would be greeted with open arms.

Indeed, Harlemites by the thousands gave Castro a rousing, even magnificent welcome, keeping a round-the-clock vigil in the pouring rain outside his balcony window. To Harlem s masses, unfazed by the red baiting and anti-Cuba hysteria of the day, Castro was that bearded revolutionary who had told White America to go to hell. They crowded the streets to see and cheer the Cuban delegation and its then thirty-four-year-old revolutionary leader.

Sadly, however, little is said, even today, about the far-reaching conversations that took place between Malcolm and Fidel that September evening. Only three newsmen were allowed to join them: two representatives and a photographer from the Negro press. They noted that the two leaders exchanged pleasantries, then spoke candidly, through their interpreters, about self-determination and national liberation. Though language differences proved a formidable barrier, author Rosemari Mealy maintains that the respect that both men expressed towards each other...solidified the ties of friendship between the Cuban revolution and the relentless struggles of the African American people.

In this slim yet significant volume, Mealy, along with contributors Elombe Brath, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Sarah E. Wright, and Bill Epton, compile the recollections of a number of persons who played important roles in this historic summit. They add to these their own perspectives as historians, poets, journalists, and political activists on the two leaders and the revolutionary movements they spawned. The combined reflections, coupled with Malcolm s and Fidel s own writings about the encounter and rare photographs of the two men together, yield an authentic accounting of a remarkable meeting of the minds.

Rosemari Mealy is Adjunct Assistant Professor at City College of NY (CUNY) Center for Worker Education. Professor Mealy has been honored for her community involvement on numerous occasions and was the recipient of the prestigious Claudia Jones Fellow in the African New World Studies Program at Florida International University (Miami). Mealy has lived and worked in Cuba where she collaborated on several projects in support of US political prisoners with Assata Shakur. She is also an activist in the International Human rights and political prisoner movement.

About the Author
Ertuğrul Sevsay is Professor of Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria and has been teaching orchestration for over two decades. His extensive knowledge has led to the development of special courses in orchestration for music engineers at the University of Miami and orchestration for orchestra conductors at Vienna's University of Music. He has always believed that orchestration is just as important for conductors and music engineers as it is for composers and arrangers and was inspired to create this comprehensive guide as a result of the lectures, seminars and classes he has led in dozens of countries worldwide.
