Excellent Overview of Benton's Entire Body of Work
By RP
The eponymous book on Thomas Hart Beneton is an excellent and indeed exhaustive introduction to the famous regionalist artist. With Grant Wood, Benton was especially active in the middle of the 20th century, creating a uniquely American style of art that tried to personify midwest simplicity while subtly critiquing some of the more absurd aspects of the national tradition. Benton's use of composition and color captured a key moment in the American experience and would help shape the views of Jackson Pollock, among others.

This book covers all this ground in a generally readable biographical approach, examining Benton's life, work, and relationships. Along the way, it reproduces hundreds of paintings and sketches, the majority of which are in full color. Instead of plates, many of these artworks are reproduced in the text, doing an excellent job of illustrating the author's narrative but likely upsetting those art purists who would prefer full-page reproductions in plate form. As you would expect of a book of this type, it also usefully contrasts Benton's evolving style with example paintings from others including Wood and a young Pollack. Perhaps most importantly, the book reproduces all (to my knowledge) of his commissioned murals from the middle of the century. Though they are rather small here and can be found in better detail in other studies specifically on the individual series, I found them to be fine given the better contextualization of the works within the artist's longer development. Indeed, my only criticism of this excellent book is that the author is sometimes too biographical in his approach, lacking in incisive art criticism in favor of a chronological tracking of the artist's movements and living situation. This can feel a bit dry and sometimes minimizes the power of the art itself. Overall, highly recommended.

Best on Benton

A copy in good condition at a reasonable cost. The best of the books so far on Benton--and out of print.

By John Neagle
This is the book on one of America's great Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton by an excellent scholar who has specialized in his work for many years. There is much intelligent discussion of major works such as the mural cycles and individual pictures, and full biographical details. One of the other reviewers found the writing "dry" but I must disagree--some of the accounts of Benton's clashes with the establishment--and he was a very colorful figure-- are hilarious. One cannot find a better book on Benton and I hope it is reissued.

The Expert at the Card Table: The Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation (Dover Magic Books), by S. W. Erdnase

"The Expert at the Card Table is the most famous, the most carefully studied book ever published on the art of manipulating cards at gaming tables." —from the Foreword by Martin Gardner.
For almost a century, this book has been considered indispensable to attaining the highest level of card mastery. In it, S. W. Erdnase, a supreme master of card manipulation, teaches card enthusiasts how to perform the dazzling tricks and sleights — many of them his own creations — that made him famous.
The first section of the book deals with card table artifice, or, to put it more bluntly, cheating at cards. Step by step, Mr. Erdnase demonstrates his own systems of false shuffling, false riffling and cutting, dealing from the bottom, and such slick moves as palming cards, "skinning the hand" — even three-card monte.
The second section covers legerdemain: the art of forcing a card, one- and two-hand transformations, the devious "slide" and more. Card handlers will love Erdnase's selection of dazzling card tricks, including The Acrobatic Jacks, The Exclusive Coterie, The Divining Rod, The Invisible Flights, A Mind Reading Trick, and many others.
In an informative Foreword to this edition, Martin Gardner relates the unhappy details of the author's personal life, and recounts the history of this famous book, whose methods, Mr. Gardner asserts, "are as useful today by magicians and card hustlers as they were in 1902. This book is still the bible of card 'mechanics,' and as much a delight to read as it was in the early years of this century."

I was completely satisfied. The best quote of the book is found ...
By Don the Baptist
A Review by Don the Baptist of the text – The Expert at the Card Table – by S. W. Erdnase.

With so much literal trash on the market today, pleasingly, this text, The Expert at the Card Table by S. W. Erdnase, seems to actually deliver what was promised.

While I am no expert at cards and have no desire to become one, this work offers 130 pages of instructions on how one might gain the “advantage” (cheat) at the card table. Beyond this, roughly half the text is directed toward card tricks and sleights of hand intended to impress others without the goal of bilking the simple.

To gain a few simple card tricks was my reason for purchasing this book, and thus, I was completely satisfied.

The best quote of the book is found on page 59, “Many hours of incessant practice must be spent to acquire the requisite amount of skill; but it must be remembered if feats at card-handling could be attained for the asking there would be little in such performance to interest or profit any one.”

Therefore, do not expect any of this to come easily.

Great condition and an amazing book!
By Deviantidol
The Expert at the Card Table - Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation by S.W. Erdnase - has been hailed at the Bible for Close-up Card Magicians and Gamblers alike. For the longest time I was strictly using The Royal Road to Card Magic DVD Set taught by R. Paul Wilson, along with the book Expert Card Technique. Both of those were great learning tools, but I was very exciting when I purchased a Hardcover copy of Expert at the Card Table for a reasonable price. The book has a nice medium, dark wooden color to it with just regular black letters for the title of the book. My copy has a scratch down the back, but it isn't noticeable while looking at it, only when you run your hand down the back of the book.

Now even though a majority of these sleights and some effects are out-dated, but if it were not for these specific sleights and card routines, then we wouldn't have nearly as many creative Magicians who really pour their heart and soul into their work. Which is the exact same feeling that I get whenever I am reading Expert at the Card Table, and there have been a few occasions when the author refers to himself as "we" so it could very well be more than just one person writing such a revolutionary book on cards. So I highly suggest any Magicians, Gambler or just the curious to pick up a copy because you're bound to find a sleight/trick/etc that will fit your own personal routine, perfectly.

THE classic of card magic
By Jeremy
What can you say about this book that hasn't been said 100 times before? In just 130 short pages (under half of which are specifically devoted to magic), S. W. Erdnase redefined card magic. I am very much an amateur, but am familiar enough to recognize nearly everything in the book, including some entire routines (Ricky Jay, for instance, does a version of "The Exclusive Coterie" in which he recites the pages-long patter from this book word for word). Further starting to practice some of the many moves presented in the book has revealed their beauty and potential.

The book is divided into two sections, "Card table artifice", dealing with cheating at draw poker (false shuffles, false cuts, bottom dealing, palming, etc.) , and "Legerdemain", dealing with card magic. The entire book is written in a very engaging and amusing style, and although describing complex hand movements in words is notoriously difficult, it is fairly easy to follow the instructions for the various moves described, with the aid of the provided drawings. And the moves are many. A performer could easily make a career strictly by mastering the slights contained in this gem.

It is hard to pick favorites from everything described in this book, but I wanted to try. The "Mexican Three Card Monte" move is one of my favorites, because it is so simple (you can master it in about 5 minutes), yet looks so smooth and is very hard to detect. Probably overall, my favorite move I have ever seen is described in this book -- the "Diagonal Palm-Shift". It is hard to put into words how elegant this move is; when I first saw a video clip of Dai Vernon performing it, I rewatched the same 5 seconds about 20 times in a row, because it is so amazing and unbelievable to see.

Anyway, this book is a classic, and remains useful today, more than 100 years after its publication. It is great. Really great.

Give this book a chance no matter your level of expertise.
By catskill collect
This book is indispensable no matter WHAT level of tarot or magic you are currently practicing. I am a beginner with tarot and had never ventured into spells whatsoever. I was hoping this book would help me get my feet wet, spell wise, by combining the symbology of what little tarot I do know with simple every day spells. It DID, and then some!

I was a little worried about the "365 days" aspect because what if it's the middle of Summer and you really want to do a spell that is listed for February 10th? I quickly discovered that the days don't really matter at all! If you want to do a spell a day and follow page by page, you can, but you don't need to. Of course some spells are aligned with certain events like an Equinox or special holiday, but mostly they are just brilliant spells for your every day life.

Each page is almost it's own little short story. Each spell takes you into its specific card and gives you a designed scenario, but also leaves it wide open for your own interpretation and intent. The spells are well thought out and detailed without being impossibly long and complicated with all kinds of ingredients that no one actually has lying around the house! Each spell also has an easy to recite incantation that doesn't make you feel embarrassed after saying it out loud.... There is also a nifty little historical tidbit on every page for that specific day.

My favorite part is the index. The index lists each spell under categories such as Personal Power, Finance and Money Matters, Travel, Letting Go, and so on. It also has an index specifically for each tarot card so you can go straight to the spells that directly utilize either your favorite card or a card you just pulled and is deeply speaking to you.

Personally, I randomly flip through it once a day and read whatever page pops up. Even if the spell doesn't relate, I still learn a thing or two about the card listed that helps me later on. Basically, give this book a chance. It's cheaper than a psychic reading or a sit down with a tarot reader and who knows, maybe if you believe hard enough, the spells may just work to bring all of those possibilities into your reality!

Something new for dabblers.
By Rhianna Walker
I don't consider myself a spiritual person but if I'm honest, paganism and wiccan beliefs have always called to something within me. In particular the practice of tarot card reading has always attracted me and for a few years now I've dabbled just a little. The history of it is fascinating and the practice of it is one I find grounding.

When an opportunity to try tarot in a new way—as part of a spell—arose through this book I was very eager to see it with a fresh set of eyes. I'm very happy to say that I found the spells presented here to be unexpectedly simple in a good way. I don't like making a to-do about my practice because it's something I do for myself the way some people choose meditation or other practices so the simplicity of each spell (with some exceptions) is to my taste.

If, like myself, you'd like to pursue your tarot related interests in a new way I very much like the spells here and would recommend picking it up to try them. You'll learn more about the cards and probably see them in new ways.

A Refreshing Take On Magic Through Tarot
By Juniper Lusk
Let me begin by saying I have Sasha's other book, 365 Tarot Spreads. I love it and work with it often.
Although 365 Spells appears complimentary to Sasha's 365 Tarot Spread book and because it also follows the same format, Sasha gives a theme for each day based on a historical event or happenstance, her 365 Spell book is entirely different kind of book.
Sasha invokes the heart of the tarot and brings the reader inside the cards to provoke desired change in our life in 365 Spells. She provides every sort of spell available. Love, financial, life path, dreams, etc.
It almost feels like just by reading the book is a spell in itself, if that makes sense.
This book would be an amazing tool for beginners. Sasha's 78 rituals to connect with each card bring the reader inside tarot in interesting and unexpected ways. For example, the Four of Swords becomes an ancient tomb where the bones of the knight rattle and speak and reveal older gods buried beneath him. Amazing!
I hesitated to write this review because I can see I will be working with 365 Tarot Spells for a long time to come. But I am so happy the book is finally here and at my fingertips, I had to post this five star review. If you love tarot, this book is a must-have!

The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye: Alchemy and the End of Time, by Jay Weidner, Vincent Bridges

Decodes the message inscribed on the Great Cross of Hendaye in France

• Uses the work of 20th-century alchemist Fulcanelli to predict the date of the fatal season of the apocalypse

• Shows how periodic galactic alignments may cause catastrophes on Earth

• Examines how the secret of the center of the galaxy reveals the true location of the lost civilization of Atlantis

• Reveals the alchemical secret of the imperishable Light Body of ancient Egypt deep within our DNA

The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye reveals one of Western occultism's deepest secrets: The alchemical transformation of base metal into gold is also the transformation of the current Iron Age into the Golden Age. Based on the work of the enigmatic 20th-century alchemist Fulcanelli, authors Weidner and Bridges show how the greatest alchemical secret is that of time itself and that coded into an obscure monument in southwestern France--the cross in the town square of Hendaye--is the imminent date of the apocalypse. The authors' explorations of this symbolism lead them from the cross of Hendaye to the western facade of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, the Pyrenees, ancient Egypt, and the secret origins of Atlantis in Peru, to reveal that we are indeed living in a "fatal season" and that this season is intimately connected to our solar system's alignment with the galactic center. The authors' in-depth examination of alchemy's connection with the coming end days also reveals that this astro-alchemical knowledge was part of the sacred science of the Egyptians and the Atlanteans, whose coded messages are, at last, deciphered to guide humanity to its future destiny.

Review
“It would be impossible to describe or even summarise the staggering amount of information in this book. The material covers vast areas of Western occult knowledge, some parts of which have almost been lost to the genuine seeker. . . . A highly recommended book.” (Jennifer Hoskens, New Dawn, May-June 2005)

". . . [This book] is packed with very clear 'indications' towards the secrets of life. . . . concise expressions of the significance of alchemy and cosmology. Anyone who is interested in the Knights Templar, Holy Grail, Christian Mysticism, Immortality and being alive in the first place should certainly read this book." (Oliver Perceval, Light, Summer 2005, Vol. 125, No.1)

"A good book, worthy of reading, and if the authors are right, either sell your bonds, or don't worry about peak oil, credit card rates, or terrorism, as the End of Time is near." (Institute for Hermetic Studies, Oct 2006)

“Fascinating detail . . . a truly groundbreaking work.” (Moira Timms, author of Beyond Prophecies and Predictions)

“The authors, by their brilliantly derived mix of alchemy with astrophysics, have breathed new life into the Fulcanelli enigma.” (Joscelyn Godwin, author of Cosmic Music)

"A brilliant deductive revelation." (John Major Jenkins, author of Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 and Galactic Alignment)

Well done!!
By A. M. Tawadros
Very nice view into esoteric occult mysteries. The strength of this book is the way Mr. Weidner & Mr. Bridges explain history, mythology, alchemy, qabalah, astronomy, astrology & tarot cards into the meaning of symbols on the Cross of Hendaye. If you have no background for the above subjects, the authors provide adequate explanations for you to understand their way of thinking. If you are closed minded, unwilling to stretch boundries in accepted history & science, you will have an under-appreciation for this book. If you have an open mind to a different view, especiality with history, you will appreciate the author's thought processes. Even someone with a substantial formal education will understand a need to look into these esoteric studies that are not formally taught. I thank the authors for this very informative book.

DiaGnosis: Even more fascinating!

Un updated, much expanded edition of A Monument to the End of Time

In 1926, an enigmatic alchemist called Fulcanelli published a book called "Le Mystere des Cathedrales", or Mystery of the Cathedrals, which explains how Gothic cathedrals have hermetic and alchemical secrets encoded into their architecture and sculptures. In 1957, a second edition appeared, and included an extra chapter on the significance of a monument in the town of Hendaye in the Pyrenees. The monument - an engraved pedestal with a pillar and engraved cross - was built around 1680. The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye is a thorough exposition of the hidden meaning encoded into this Hendaye Cross.

The authors have traced the alchemical thread back to Egypt; to the first Gnostic groups, and re-exposed the fact that behind alchemy lies a triple transmutation - inner, outer and time. The inner transmutation is the refining of the psycho-sexual energies and fluids; the outer is using the inner change to transmute physical states; the third is the same transmutation applied to the whole Earth, changing the Age of Iron to the Age of Gold. The 4 ages - Gold, Silver, Bronze and Iron relate to the 26,000-year cycle of precession, with the Fall occurring when the Tree (the celestial axis, or earth's rotational axis), points away from the centre of the galaxy. "Resurrection"or "redemption", occurs when the Tree points towards the centre of the galaxy. This is the point when the "sparks of light" - our souls as fragments of God - return to the source.

The thread is traced from ancient Egypt to the Coptic Church, the Gnostics, the Hebrews, Islaam (the Sufis), the Order of Sion, and the Knights Templar, the grail romances, the tarot, and, with increasing persecution of heretics, the engraving of cathedrals, and finally, the Rosicrucian movement.

The 4 engravings on the pedestal are found to refer to the 4 tarot trumps; The Star; The Moon; The Sun, and Judgement. The pillar is the Djed, or Earth's rotational axis ( Moira Timms has already pointed this out see Raising the Djed). The two "x" engravings refer to the winding of the ecliptic and the equinoctial points, plus trump 20, judgement. The "ocruxaves pesunica" engraving means "the secret concerns a cross and a snake which somehow measures the 12th part". When combined, these clues (along with clues from the kabbalistic Tree of Life, whose 22 paths correlate to the 22 tarot trumps), the authors conclude that half a precessional cycle ago, the spring equinox fell on the cusp of Leo/Virgo; 12,960 years later, in 2002, the autumn (fall) equinox will be in the same position. The planetary attributions of the tarot trumps, combined with the orientation of the faces of the monument confirms that 22 September 2002 is the date in question. Trump 14, temperance (Alchemy), correlates to the direction of Galactic centre, while trump 21, the World, correlates to the opposing Galactic edge.

Fulcanelli implies that the cross at Hendaye signifies a "fatal period" of a "double catastrophe". If autumn equinox 2002 is the mid-point of a 20-year period (the XX engraving implies this), this may imply the last katun of the Mayan "Great Cycle"(13-Baktun cycle), since this is the nearest autumn equinox to the katun mid-point (12 Feb 2003, Long Count date 12.19.10.0.0). The authors were stunned to discover that Paul LaViolette has been warning the world of just such a double catastrophe, in the form of a galactic core explosion, which he already tentatively linked to the 2012 end-point. The first effects would be "electromagnetic shifts...crustal torque, pole shifts, tidal waves and high winds", the second catastrophe would be "an explosion of the sun's corona caused by the influx of cosmic dust pushed by the galactic superwave".

Fulcanelli also said that the inscription "ocruxaves pesunica" revealed a place of refuge. By clues from Fulcanelli, the authors arrived at 2 anagrams: Inca cave, Cusco, Peru, and Hail to the Cross at Urcos. The authors were again amazed to find not only caves at Cusco, but a nearby town called Urcos with a cross. Sadly, the original cross had been destroyed, but they concluded that the place of refuge may be either the caves at Cusco, or the legendary tunnels under the Andes, if someone finds an entrance.

The authors suggest that we should learn to "weave" our "Bardo or transitional body into nicely fractal flows of self-awareness" simply by meditating on compassion, as suggested by the work of Itzhak Bentov (Bentov explains in Stalking the wild Pendulum p.33-36 & 54-56 that in meditative states, the breathing is so gentle that it no longer interferes with the feedback of the aorta, allowing the system to become resonant, allowing the whole body to resonate at the same frequency as the earth - 7.8 Hz. How this is affected by the increasing rate of Schumann resonance remains to be researched). We shall thus be ready to be "harvested", to become a soul inhabiting a star, like the pharaohs of Egypt (see Star Birth Bardo in the Body of Orion). The Paris Papyrus gives some clues that the transformational process may be triggered by the light from the glow of the exploding galactic centre, triggering a cerebro-chemical outpouring which fuels an internal light that externalizes as "the shining light or star body of imperishable quality". The authors suggest that we need to prepare by performing a ceremony every equinox, in which the kabbalistic tree of life is "projected onto the Celestial sphere", a technique developed by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Brilliant, but so many topics without logical organization
By David Montaigne
Before I even get into this book I want to point out how impressed I am with the thinking of Jay Weidner. He really understands how the secret wisdom of ancient mystery schools could be conveyed across the ages. Anyone considering this book will probably also appreciate his analysis of Stanley Kubrick's movies, especially 2001 and the Shining. Kubrick was a genius, possibly the greatest producer/director ever - and I would never have appreciated the unthinkable scope of what he achieved - especially the alchemical nature of 2001: A Space Odyssey - without Weidner's interpretation. Look it up and prepare to be amazed.

That being said, "The Mysteries of the Great Cross of Hendaye" is not an easy read, nor is it meant for a mass audience. Unlike Weidner's interpretation of Kubrick's movies, you have to be well educated in certain topics to fully appreciate this book. Readers who are already familiar with the concepts of alchemy, golden ages, eschatology, the precession of the earth's axis, the astronomical nature of the dragon, the cube of space, the sun behind the sun, the Knights Templar, the philosopher's stone, the tree of life, galactic superwaves, Atlantis, and the Bible (especially the New Testament, especially the Book of Revelations) will understand a great deal more of this book than those readers being introduced to those topics through this book.

Despite the chaotic whirlwind of topics through which the authors seek support for their overall conclusions, the heart of this book is simple enough - there are two main themes - an analysis of a 17th century monument which encodes a great deal of hermetic wisdom, and a study of "Fulcanelli," the pseudonym of one or more modern initiates in a hidden mystery school who explain(s) the esoteric messages hidden in the art and architecture of France's greatest cathedrals. Fulcanelli's explanations are found in the 1926 book "Le Mystere des cathedrales," a book which brought many secret traditions and hidden wisdom into the light of day for the first time in centuries. Fulcanelli's book also had a new edition three decades later with a new chapter about an intriguing little stone monument in Hendaye, just across from the French border on the Atlantic coast of Spain.

The monument at Hendaye is covered in alchemical symbols on the four sides of its base. Summarized very briefly and incompletely, Fulcanelli interprets these as derived from the Tarot deck of cards and also says the overall meaning is that every half-precession cycle (every 12,900 years) there are world-destroying disasters on Earth caused by something at the center of the galaxy. Weidner and Bridges believe the "double catastrophe" Fulcanelli says will hit the northern hemisphere will occur sometime between 1992 and 2012, but that it can be avoided in a place of refuge - a cave near Cusco, Peru. The authors reach these conclusions based on an analysis of the Latin inscription on the cross on Hendaye's monument, which contains a glaring error they think was intentional.

The authors' focus on alchemical transformation is best understood after realizing that alchemy is not so much the attempt to transmute lead into gold, but rather to (re)create a golden age. They argue that this can be accomplished only during a brief window of time (around 2012) determined by the center of our galaxy. This seems to indicate that the Mayan focus on the alignment with the galactic center and the winter solstice sun around 2012 may be very meaningful, or at least share a source of inspiration with the Hermetic traditions of Egypt. We will be lucky if the coming destruction results in a golden age.

Despite the great number of topics discussed and the meandering route taken through many secretive topics, readers seeking a greater understanding of esoteric wisdom should reach the end of the book a little wiser. As an author myself, I found hundreds of useful explanations, references, and quotes in this book - and it remains one of my favorite books on deciphering an ancient understanding of eschatology.

Historical Geography of Crop Plants: A Select Roster, by Jonathan D. Sauer

Historical Geography of Crop Plants is devoted to a variety of staple and food crops, as well as fodder, fiber, timber, rubber, and other crops. The origins and histories of many of these crops have been clarified only recently by new research. The book has been arranged alphabetically by family and higher taxa for easy reference. Within families, species and cultivars are listed chronologically and geographically. The taxonomy and geography of probable wild progenitors have been outlined, and archeological evidence (when available) and historical evidence on region and domestication are traced. The subsequent evolution and spread of many domesticated species are examined, and the reasons behind the diversity in crop histories are explored. Historical Geography of Crop Plants will be a useful reference for botanists, economic botanists, ethnobiologists, agronomists, geographers, and others interested in the subject.

"Sauer's book manages to integrate historical geography and the plant geography of crop domesticates as has no other recent monograph, just as surely as it crafts a classic compendium." - Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Volume 8, Number 4, 1994

A select book
By P. van Rijckevorsel
This is a scholarly summary of what is known about the origins of our prominent crop plants; botanically and geographically. This book is very carefully written and avoids any unnecessary ramifications. However it does contain a wealth of detail: why is one of the American cottons traded under the name of 'Egyptian cotton'? What is the crop with most sets of chromosomes? Etc, etc. Highly recommend for those interested in the backgrounds of the worlds crops.
