All the songs from Appetite for Destruction, with detailed transcriptions, song notes and an introduction at the face of the book, lyrics, and more! I also bought THE STYLES AND TECHNIQUES OF SLASH, which was a breakdown of some of the songs from Appetite with a bonus CD. Both are recommendable but this is definitely more straightforward. If you want to learn Gn'R, start there. If you're already good at guitar, get this book. It's hard, and takes practice, but the songs are ALL great. Even Think About You is fun to play, and it's my least favorite song on Appetite.

Appetite for Destruction

In Appetite for Destruction, Gene writes about how guns and roses emerged from an LA club that legends Van Halen, Motely Cure and poison, also emerged from. Gene gives an excellent point of view of how hard they had it when they first started. He continues to write about how even know they had numerous albums and concerts, the luck for the band, just kept on getting worse. From someone's head getting stumped in ar a mush pit at one of their concerts, to alcohol and drug overdoses.

It talks of how slash tried to over came his drug problems and how Axel had a huge control issue over the band. This band was created of friendship and ruined by greed, corruption, drugs and alcohol. It even tells you secrets of songs and stories of them. I would give it 5 stars.

Top Contender for Business Book of the Year

Beverly Behan's Great Companies Deserve Great Boards is probably the most important book on corporate directorship since William G. Bowen's Inside the Boardroom (1994). I encountered this book as a chairman of the board, an experienced public company director and audit chairman -- and I've been recommending it ever since I finished it the first time. On-point, highly readable, contemporary, and above all useful, Behan (a columnist for Bloomberg Businessweek) employs an ebullient didactic style, so rare and welcome in the Sarbanes-Oxley Dodd-Frank era. Here's a field guide to the way corporate directors think, act, and strategize . . . or more correctly, how we should.

Any book recommended by Norm Augustine and Frank McKenna certainly deserves a wide readership, but this one will contend for business book of the year. Behan deals forthrightly with the sometimes-competing expectations of the board and management, audit committee frictions, and the board in M&A decision-making. But her chapter on "Transforming Your Board" is really worth the price of admission, providing real-life methods of ways to "force the conversion."

What a voice of sanity and serious intellectual discourse in our boardrooms and C-suites, delivered in an extraordinary book.

No one has more experience working with Boards than Bev Behan, and that comes across clearly in this book. Whether you are a board member or a CEO whose success depends on working effectively with the board, you will find that this book is full of practical ideas about what really matters -- high performance.

And let's remember that there is a lot at stake, i.e., the need for extraordinary organizations that not only create wealth, and positively effect the livelihood of thousands of employees, but also contribute to the betterment society.

A practical guide to exemplary performance

Why do so many boards just comply with all the rules, get on politely and keep a watchful eye on management without ever leading them anywhere?

Nobody could disagree with the title of this book. Great Companies Deserve Great Boards . The sad fact is, however, that many companies cannot be great because their boards just don’t manage to add that little bit of extra strategic awareness that can make all the difference between a reasonable performance, in line with its peers, or an exemplary one, that far outstrips peers.

This book can help your board to make the jump from good to great. It is full of real life case studies that give positive examples of the actions and activities that will lift the contribution from conformance to performance and into elite board athleticism. My personal favourite is the story of the board of Ford and their deep dive into the process of designing and producing a new car; it involved a visit to the design centre, an overview of the process, education sessions on design, dinner with the designers and a morning at the test tracks driving each car in the new range and experiencing it as the intended purchasers would. Wow! That is a lot of board and management hours but it will enable a lot of creative thinking and allow the board to understand the process they oversee.

The book is full of first hand experiences and the insights from these are easily transferrable across industry sectors and geographic regions. It is like getting ten years’ experience in one easy month of part time reading.

The book is well written, succinctly worded and beautifully edited. The voice of the author is clear, as are the voices of the various protagonists in the case study. This adds an enticing and seductive tone to the work; it is like standing at a cocktail party on the outskirts of a group that is vigorously a topic of interest – you just can’t help but be drawn in!

As I am fond of quoting ‘A mind expanded by an original thought will never regain its original dimensions’. A mind after reading this book will never be satisfied with anything but a valuable board. This book should be mandatory for all boards and their advisers.

Branch accused several women of bewitching her, two of whom were put on trial for witchcraft. Escaping Salem takes us inside the Connecticut courtroom and into the minds of the surprisingly skeptical Stamford townspeople. Were the pain and screaming due to natural or supernatural causes? Was Branch simply faking the symptoms? And if she was indeed bewitched, why believe her specific accusations, since her information came from demons who might well be lying? For the judges, Godbeer shows, the trial was a legal thicket. All agreed that witches posed a real and serious threat, but proving witchcraft (an invisible crime) in court was another matter. The court in Salem had become mired in controversy over its use of dubious evidence. In an intriguing chapter, Godbeer examines Magistrate Jonathan Selleck's notes on how to determine the guilt of someone accused of witchcraft, providing an illuminating look at what constituted proof of witchcraft at the time. The stakes were high--if found guilty, the two accused women would be hanged.
In the afterword, Godbeer explains how he used the trial evidence to build his narrative, offering an inside perspective on the historian's craft. a tale of two witches

Few people know that while the infamous Salem witch hunt was taking place in 1692, southwestern Connecticut was undergoing a scare of its own. Godbeer has meticulously researched this event and presents a remarkably detailed story based upon the participants own words. He follows the accusers, the victims, the "witches", the ministers, and the magistrates, from the beginning of the outbreak to its much-more-sensible-than Salem conclusion. Seems one could be a witch and avoid execution in Olde New England. Puritans all - how did Connecticut avoid hysteria and wanton killing? This brief book tells the tale in an interesting, historically accurate fashion.

Witches Unite!

I came across this little book while doing research on my ancestors. After learning I was a direct descendant of Daniel Westcott, I found his connection to late 17th century witchcraft in the colonies. The book is a little dry, but the facts and bits of colonial wisdom were interesting....not to mention Daniel and wife Abigail's approach to dealing with a house servant who in today';s world would be a resident of the top-floor, inpatient, psych ward.

Solid with some holes...

I would probably rate this in at 3.5 stars...but I rounded up to 4 stars.

'Escaping Salem' tells the story of the 'witch hunt' in Stamford, CT. We have all grown up hearing about the witch hunts in Salem. There have been movies and there have been discussions of the blood thirsty people in that community going after the witches to rid their villages of their evil practices.

This book begins to examine the people behind some of the stories in the relatively quiet community of Stamford. The book looks at one particular case of a girl named Kate Branch of her fits or rage, her delusions and her overall strange behavior. It discusses the people that many believed were witches and why they considered them witches. Though the arguments were often weak, the arguments gained traction and led to the trials of a couple of women accused of being witches.

The book takes you in to the courtroom as you see some of the problems of the prosecution and the difficulty of 'proving' witchcraft. I had always believed that trials were thrown together to just convict but you can see that there was definitely more effort needed to convict someone.

The biggest problem with the book is that it often reads like a textbook until the last chapter when the author interjects more of his thoughts and conclusions. The book is using public documents so there are some holes in the story which Godbeer tries to fill. Overall, an interesting peak into the late 1600s court system and witches problem.
